Travelling with young children (under 5) – Kenya is more manageable with young children than many parents expect. The key is shorter game drives – two hours in the morning rather than four – and lodges with swimming pools and shaded outdoor areas where little ones can decompress between drives. Some of the best lodges/camps for families include Serena Lodges (Masai Mara and Amboseli), Basecamp Masai Mara, and Sarova Mara Game Camp. Amboseli is particularly well-suited to young children: the flat open landscape means wildlife is easily visible without long searching drives, and the elephant herds are so close and so large that even a two-year-old knows exactly what they are looking at. We recommend a maximum of 5 to 6 days on safari with children under five, combined with a beach stay at the end.
School-age children (5 to 12) – This is the golden age for a Kenya safari. Children old enough to be patient during a game drive and young enough to be completely awestruck by what they see. The Masai Mara is the natural centrepiece for this age group – the density of wildlife means something is always happening, and a river crossing during Migration season is the kind of thing a ten-year-old talks about for years. Several lodges in the Mara and Amboseli run junior ranger programmes – guided bush education sessions where children learn to track animals, identify birds, and understand the ecosystem they are visiting. Teenagers (13 and above) – Teenagers who have no interest in a family holiday often discover they have a very strong interest in a Kenya safari. The Masai Mara satisfies on pure spectacle – lion hunts, river crossings, cheetah sprints across the open plain. But it is often the cultural experiences that make the deepest impression: spending an evening with Maasai guides, learning about a way of life that has coexisted with lions and elephants for centuries, is the kind of encounter that shifts perspective in a teenager in ways a classroom never quite manages. For older teenagers, a hot air balloon safari at dawn over the Mara is an experience genuinely unlike anything else they will have done.
Multi-generational families – Kenya works beautifully for three-generation travel. Boat ride on Lake Naivasha – A gentle guided boat ride among hippos, pelicans, and fish eagles – calm, safe, and perfect for young children. Combine it with a walking safari on Crescent Island, where families can walk freely among giraffes, zebras, and wildebeest on foot.
Hell’s Gate National Park – One of the only parks in Kenya where families can walk and cycle among wildlife – no vehicle required. Dramatic red cliffs, a winding gorge with geothermal steam vents, and the landscape that famously inspired Disney’s The Lion King. Pairs perfectly with a Lake Naivasha boat ride on the same day.
Mount Longonot – A rewarding half-day hike up a dormant volcano in the Great Rift Valley – best for children aged 10 and above. The crater rim views across the valley are exceptional. Sits close to Hell’s Gate and Naivasha, making it easy to combine all three into one full-day excursion.
Maasai village visit – A genuine window into a way of life that has coexisted with wildlife for centuries. Children are warmly welcomed and often join in traditional activities – jumping, singing, and learning a few words of Maa. For school-age children, it is often the highlight of the trip.
A day in Nairobi – Two attractions are genuinely unmissable for children. The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage runs a daily public visit at 11am – watching rescued baby elephants being fed and cared for is unforgettable. The Giraffe Centre lets children hand-feed Rothschild giraffes from a raised platform. Both take half a day combined and are easy to reach from any Nairobi hotel.
After several days of early morning game drives, a few nights on the Kenyan coast is the ideal way to wind down as a family. The Indian Ocean is warm year-round, the beaches are beautiful, and the contrast between the savannah and the sea gives the whole trip a natural shape – adventure first, relaxation last.
Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, is consistently rated one of East Africa’s finest beaches. The water is calm and shallow close to shore, making it safe for children of all ages, and the beach itself is wide, white, and unhurried. Mombasa’s Old Town is worth half a day of exploration – a Swahili city with Arab, Portuguese, and British architectural layers that older children and teenagers find genuinely interesting.
We can add a 3 to 5-night beach extension to any of our family safari packages. It adds little to the logistics since Mombasa has its own international airport, meaning you can fly in and out of different cities without backtracking.
We welcome children from age 5 upward on our family safari packages. For children under 5, we recommend shorter itineraries of 4 to 5 days with parks that have compact game viewing areas – Amboseli is particularly well-suited to very young children. Some lodges have their own minimum age policies, typically 5 or 8 years old, and we factor this into our accommodation recommendations. If you are travelling with a child under 5, just let us know and we will design the itinerary and choose lodges accordingly.
Yes. Children under 12 typically receive a reduced park entry fee at most Kenyan national parks, which is passed directly on to you in the package price. Some lodges also offer child sharing rates when children sleep in the same room or tent as parents. When you enquire, tell us the ages of all travellers and we will show you the full breakdown including any child reductions that apply.
All our family safari packages include national park and conservancy entry fees, full-board accommodation (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), airport transfers on arrival and departure, all game drives in a private Toyota Land Cruiser 4×4 with a pop-up roof, drinking water throughout all drives, and an experienced English-speaking TRA-licensed driver-guide. Government taxes are included.
For most families, 6 to 8 days on safari is the sweet spot – long enough to visit two or three parks and see a genuine diversity of wildlife, without the itinerary becoming exhausting. For families with young children under 7, we recommend a shorter safari of 4 to 5 days combined with a beach stay at the end. For older children and teenagers, a 9 to 10-day itinerary that includes Samburu in the north adds remarkable variety.
