Luxury camps and lodges in Kenya sit inside or right on the boundary of the parks, which means you skip the long drives in and out that eat into morning and evening game drive windows. Properties like these also tend to have smaller guest numbers, so your game drive vehicle isn’t competing with a convoy of others at every sighting.

The guide makes an even bigger difference than most people anticipate. A good guide is not just someone who knows where the animals are. They understand animal behavior, can read a scene before it unfolds, and make the whole experience feel like a personal expedition rather than a bus tour. The Parks and What You’ll Find There

Kenya’s parks each have a distinct character, and part of planning a good itinerary is matching the parks to what you actually want to see.

The Masai Mara is the most celebrated, and for good reason. The open savanna makes for easy sightings, the big cats are there year-round, and from late July through October the wildebeest migration pushes through from the Serengeti in enormous numbers. It is as dramatic as the photographs suggest.

The Kenya Wildlife Service manages the national reserves and publishes useful background on each park if you want to go deeper on what each one holds.

Amboseli sits in the shadow of Kilimanjaro and is Kenya’s best park for elephants. The herds here are large and relaxed around vehicles, and on a clear morning the backdrop is about as striking as scenery gets anywhere in Africa.

Samburu in the north is different again. The landscape is drier and more rugged, and it holds species you won’t find further south, including the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and the beisa oryx. If you’re combining multiple parks, Samburu adds genuine variety to a trip.

Lake Nakuru is compact and easy to cover in a day or two. It’s historically famous for flamingos, though numbers vary by season. What’s more reliable is the rhino population, both black and white, making it one of Kenya’s better parks for that particular sighting.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is worth a mention if rhinos are on your list. It holds the largest black rhino population in East Africa and is also home to the last two northern white rhinos on the planet. Ol Pejeta runs more like a private conservancy than a national park, which shows in the quality of the experience.

Choosing the Right Length

Three to four days is enough to do one park well and come away with strong sightings and a genuine feel for the bush. Five to seven days lets you combine two or three parks without feeling rushed between them. Nine days or more is for those who want to cover Kenya properly, including the north, the Mara, and perhaps a coastal finish.

Practical Things Worth Knowing

The best time to visit depends partly on what you want to see. The dry seasons, June through October and January through February, are generally when wildlife is most concentrated and easiest to spot. The migration crosses into the Mara between July and October. Outside these windows the parks are quieter and rates at many lodges drop, and the landscape is greener after the rains.

Pack light. Most bush flights have strict baggage limits, typically 15kg in a soft bag. Neutral colors work best for game drives, and a camera with a reasonable zoom lens is worth bringing.
