The best 5-star safaris in Kenya, by road and by air

Nine trips we would put forward for a VIP-level safari. Every one is private and can be changed around your dates.

Prices are per person sharing in US dollars and exclude international flights. Each “from” price is for six people travelling between January and June. Smaller groups pay more, and most trips cost more from July to December, so we confirm your exact price in writing before you pay a deposit.

“The trip completely exceeded our expectations, even despite it not being ‘peak season’ we were able to tick off Africa’s Big 5 on the very first game drive. This was in no small part down to our guide, Bonnie…”

Planning a 5-star safari in Kenya

A 5-star safari in Kenya comes down to three things: where you sleep, who guides you and how much control you have over your day. The trips above are the ones we would choose for that, and they run from a four-day fly-in to a two-week route that ends at the coast.

What 5-Star Means on Safari

Star ratings suit city hotels better than tented camps. A tent on the Ewaso Nyiro River can give you a better stay than a large lodge with a higher grade, because on safari the location, the guide and the staff count for more than the room. So we do not quote star ratings for camps. We name the property, tell you what it is like, and leave you to decide.

When people ask us for a 5-star safari, they usually mean camps and lodges in or close to the parks, good food, attentive service and a guide who is theirs for the whole trip. Our pick of the best camps, park by park sets out where we would stay and why.

What a VIP Safari Includes

VIP is not an official grade in Kenya, so ask any operator what they mean by it. With us it means a private 4×4 and a dedicated guide from start to finish, with your own hours on game drives, and a route and camps agreed with you in advance. Our head guides, Boniface Kamau and John Mithamo, each have more than 20 years in these parks.

It does not buy you an empty sighting. In the reserves, private guests follow the same rules as everyone else. The Mara Triangle rules, for example, limit viewing to 10 minutes when more than five vehicles are waiting. Read more on what a VIP safari really includes.

Road or Fly-In

A top-level safari does not have to fly. Our road trips use a private Land Cruiser, which lets you stop when you see something and costs less. Nairobi to the Mara takes 5 to 6 hours by road, and the longer drive to Samburu is a real part of the day.

Flying takes about an hour between many parks and suits shorter trips, but light aircraft have strict luggage limits and you travel on a scheduled service. Many of our guests mix the two, such as driving the northern circuit and flying to Diani at the end.

Exclusive Kenya Safari Experiences

Some of the best days come from a single add-on. A dawn balloon flight over the Mara costs around $450 per person and needs booking in advance. At Ol Pejeta Conservancy, your guide will look for black and white rhino, and the conservancy also has a chimpanzee sanctuary you can visit. In Samburu you can look for Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and gerenuk, which you will not find in the southern parks.

Ending at Diani Beach is the other popular choice, with two to three nights on the coast after the early starts. Tell us what matters most and we will build the trip around it.

What It Costs

The trips on this page start at $1,950 per person, and the 12-day trip reaches $12,570 per person for two people between July and December. Group size, season and flights move the price more than anything else. We break this down in what a 5-star safari in Kenya costs.

Frequently asked questions

In Kenya, neither is an official grade. With us, every luxury safari is already private. A VIP-level trip goes further on camps, length and how the route is planned around you.

We do not quote star ratings for camps, because ratings suit hotels better than tented camps. We name each property in your itinerary instead.

The trips on this page start at $1,950 per person for six sharing between January and June. Two people pay more, and most trips cost more from July to December.

No. Five of the trips here are mainly by road. We can also add a flight to a road trip if you want to save a long drive.

June to October is the long dry season, with the migration usually in the Mara from late July to October. Book early for those months, because the best camps fill first.

Not at the moment. All of our game viewing is by vehicle, with an optional balloon flight in the Mara.
