Trip overview

Nine days covering Amboseli, Masai Mara, and Samburu using scheduled flights throughout. Two nights in Amboseli, then four nights in the Mara as the centerpiece, finishing with two nights in Samburu. This routing works efficiently: start south beneath Kilimanjaro, fly west to the Mara for extended game viewing, then finish north in Samburu’s special wilderness.

The accommodations are genuinely excellent. Ol Tukai Lodge sits inside Amboseli National Park next to a swamp where elephants feed constantly. For the Mara, you stay at Sarova Mara Camp, which is one of the highest rated luxury camps in the Masai Mara. Samburu finishes the safari with two nights in the wild, quiet north.

Flying between camps takes 45 minutes to an hour per leg. You land at airstrips minutes from the properties instead of spending entire days on rough roads. For this level of accommodation, it makes sense: you arrive ready to enjoy evening game drives rather than exhausted from travel.

Four nights in the Mara gives you three full days of game drives, which is proper time to explore without rushing. Two nights each at Amboseli and Samburu provides a full day at each plus arrival and departure days.

Accommodations:

  • Amboseli: Ol Tukai Lodge (2 nights)
  • Masai Mara: Sarova Mara Camp (4 nights)
  • Samburu: Samburu Intrepids Tented Camp (2 nights)

Your route

Amboseli 2 nights · Masai Mara 4 nights · Samburu 2 nights. Starts and ends in Nairobi.

Flights between parks are included.

Day-by-day itinerary

Flight Time: 45 minutes · Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel and transfer to Wilson Airport. Flight to Amboseli leaves around 9:00 or 10:00 AM. Short hop south with Kilimanjaro visible long before you land if it’s clear.

Touch down at Amboseli airstrip around 10:30 AM. Transfer to Ol Tukai Lodge takes about 5 minutes, it’s the only lodge actually inside the park itself. The location next to a permanent swamp means wildlife passes through constantly. Elephants, buffalo, zebra drinking and feeding right in front of the rooms.

Check in, lunch on the terrace overlooking the swamp, then first game drive at 4:00 PM. Amboseli is small at 392 square kilometers but everything concentrates around the water sources. Elephants are the main attraction, big tuskers, family groups, young bulls. Also plenty of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, different antelope species.

Dinner and overnight at Ol Tukai Lodge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day in Amboseli. Early start around 6:30 AM when Kilimanjaro is usually visible. The mountain typically shows at dawn, then clouds form around the summit by mid-morning. Your guide will position you for the classic shot, elephants with the peak behind them.

Morning around the swamps watching elephant families interact. These animals are well-habituated, so you can get close. The research program here has tracked families since 1972, your guide often knows individuals by sight. Back to the lodge for lunch. The swamp remains active all day from the terrace, so you’re still watching wildlife during midday rest.

Afternoon drive at 4:00 PM. Observation Hill in the center of the park is worth climbing for views across the basin. Easy walk, decent perspective. Birdlife around the wetlands is good, pelicans, geese, herons, egrets. Cheetahs sometimes hunt on the dry lake bed. Lions take more work to find than in the Mara but they’re around.

Dinner and overnight at Ol Tukai Lodge.

Flight Time: 1 hour · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Quick early drive if there’s time, otherwise just breakfast and pack up. Transfer to the airstrip for your flight to the Mara. Usually routes through Nairobi with a fuel stop, then continues west. Total time about an hour including the stop.

Land at Keekorok airstrip, the usual airstrip for Sarova Mara on the eastern side of the reserve. The transfer to camp takes about 30 minutes, with game viewing on the way.

Check in, lunch, then first Mara game drive around 4:00 PM. Wildlife density is immediately noticeable. Lions, elephants, buffalo spread across the grassland. The Mara River and its tributaries hold hippos and crocodiles year-round.

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Two full days in the Mara with morning and afternoon game drives. Early starts around 6:30 AM. Lions are almost guaranteed, the Mara has healthy populations. Leopards take more effort but sightings are regular near the Mara River where there’s tree cover. Cheetahs prefer the open plains for hunting. Buffalo in big herds, rhinos less common but present, elephants everywhere.

If you’re here July through October, the migration will dominate. Over a million wildebeest crossing from Tanzania. River crossings are dramatic when they happen but completely unpredictable, might see multiple crossings in a morning or wait days. Your guide stays in radio contact and will get you there if something’s building.

Outside those months, resident wildlife still delivers plenty. Actually less crowded without the migration rush.

Optional hot air balloon safari available if booked ahead (around $450 per person).

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Third full day covering different areas or revisiting productive spots. By now your guide knows what you’re interested in and will adjust accordingly. Want to find rhinos? He knows where they’ve been lately. Looking for cheetahs? He’ll focus on the open plains where they hunt.

The Mara River deserves extended time even without crossings, lots of hippos, big crocodiles, different bird species along the water. Worth an hour just sitting and watching interactions.

Between drives, time to relax at camp. Sarova Mara has a pool, spa and large public areas, with good food and attentive service.

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Camp.

Flight Time: 1.5 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Early morning game drive, breakfast, then fly to Samburu. The routing usually goes via Nairobi with a connection. Total time about 1.5 hours including stops. Land at Kalama airstrip around midday.

Transfer to Samburu Intrepids Tented Camp takes about 15 minutes.

Check in, lunch by the spring where elephants come to drink, then first game drive at 4:00 PM. Drives work across both Kalama Conservancy and Samburu Reserve, you’re not limited to one or the other.

First afternoon focuses on the northern specialist species. Reticulated giraffe with distinctive geometric patterns. Grevy’s zebra, bigger with narrower stripes. Gerenuk standing on hind legs. Beisa oryx. None of these appear in southern Kenya. Lions and leopards along the Ewaso Ng’iro River.

Dinner and overnight at Samburu Intrepids Tented Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day exploring Samburu Reserve and Kalama Conservancy. Early drive at 6:30 AM when it’s cooler and animals are active. The river is where everything happens, elephants crossing, crocodiles on banks, hippos in pools.

Samburu’s predators are healthy. Lions rest in riverine shade during heat. Leopards appear regularly in the big trees. Cheetahs work the open areas. Visitor numbers here are a fraction of the Mara, so sightings feel more private.

Back to camp mid-morning for breakfast. Pool, views from your tent, or just relax. Optional activities include guided walks in the conservancy or village visits. Afternoon drive from 4:00 PM. Night drives are permitted in the conservancy, good for leopards and nocturnal species.

Last evening in Samburu, with sundowners on a nearby hill.

Dinner and overnight at Samburu Intrepids Tented Camp.

Flight Time: 1 hour · Meals: Breakfast

Final early morning game drive before breakfast. Last chance for northern species at dawn. Return to camp around 9:00 AM, pack up, transfer to Kalama airstrip.

Flight to Nairobi lands at Wilson around noon. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for international connections or to a city hotel if staying over. Most international flights leave evening, timing works well with the morning flight from Samburu.

A Couple in December 2025 - 5 Stars We booked with Stanley and Majestic Safari for the 6-day luxury tour through Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Amboseli. The trip completely exceeded our expectations, even despite it not being ‘peak season’ we were able to tick off Africa’s Big 5 on the very first game drive. This was in no small part down to our guide, Bonnie, who was an essential part of tracking these animals - you have to request him if booking through Majestic. Each accommodation also exceeded our expectations in terms of location, comfort, quality and service of the staff. Being a first time safari for us, we weren’t sure what to expect - but selecting the luxury option was well worth it. All aspects of travel and organisation was seamless. Once booked, there was next to nothing for us to think about as we were in experienced hands - and we were glad to have partnered with Majestic as there was significantly more organisation required in the background than we originally realised. Stanley also went above and beyond the itinerary, picking us up from the airport late at night despite the tour not starting until a few days later and ensuring we had some food to take into the hotel. This was after providing us with in-depth packing lists and general guidance on exploring Nairobi. I couldn’t recommend Majestic enough and hope to arrange another trip with Stanley in the future.

A Beautiful Safari with an Excellent Guide – Just Check the Route First Majestic Kenyan Safaris gave us a wonderful Kenya experience, and our guide was genuinely lovely. He was calm, kind, and extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife, parks, and local environment, which made the safari both engaging and meaningful. One thing worth noting for future travellers is the itinerary structure. Over the six-day safari, the route involved long drives in a zig-zag pattern rather than a simple circular loop. This meant more transit time on some days. This was not the fault of the company or the guide, as the itinerary was clearly outlined, but something we wish we had paid closer attention to when booking. Overall, Majestic Kenyan Safaris were professional, warm, and well organised. With careful attention to route planning beforehand, they offer a truly memorable safari experience.

The most Unforgettable Safari Stanley Gichuki crafted the journey of dreams Thanks to our incredible guide, Bonie whose fearless spirit turned every mile into magic. He welcomed us in Samburu National Park and led us off the beaten path with a deep, soulful knowledge of the land, its stories, its rhythms, its wild heart. Samburu was our favorite in terms of landscape. We stood in awe in Samburu as reticulated giraffes swept across the horizon, watched Grevy’s zebras stride with quiet elegance, and felt the earth tremble beneath African elephants. We held our breath as a cheetah emerged from the tall grass, and we followed Kamau Boniethrough wet, treacherous tracks to where lions rule their hidden kingdom. Our journey continued into Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a sanctuary of hope, where we encountered the gentle wisdom of chimpanzees at the Jane Goodall, Sweetwater Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and witnessed the immense beauty of both white and black rhinos, alongside more elephants, more lions… and countless unforgettable moments. Our journey ended in the Maasai Mara . Our last drive was unforgettabel as we watched a cheetah devouring a thompson gazelle, leaving the rest of the kill to a fight between two jackals and a flock of vultures. We had a brief encounter with a leopard walking down a river and watched more lions enjoying their buffalo lunch. Truly memorable experiences. Kenya, you are once in a lifetime. Thank you

Safari with Majestick Kenya We just returned from a 9 days safari, and we enjoyed it very much. Everything was arranged very well, our driver/guide Bonnie was outstanding. The tour company did everything to be helpfull in picking up from the airport, taking us with their jeep to all the place we visited, and we had very nice game drives. We went to Samburu, Oj Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara. The lodges were great, good value for money and we were upgraded in 2 places. Thank you Majestick, and al your staff. We highly recommend you.

Amazing Safari Experience! Just got back from an amazing 7-day safari with Majestic Kenya Safaris! Our guide Samuel was fantastic - incredible wildlife knowledge and spotted animals from miles away. We saw the Big Five, including a pride of lions with cubs in the Maasai Mara. Everything was perfectly organized from airport transfers to accommodations. The mix of lodges and tented camps was great, and falling asleep to African bush sounds was magical. Vehicle was comfortable for the longer drives between parks. One activity got cancelled due to weather, but they quickly arranged something even better. Would definitely recommend to anyone planning a Kenya safari - unforgettable experience!

Best Safari experience! Majestic Kenya Safaris in Nairobi exceeded all my expectations! From the moment we booked, their team was incredibly professional and attentive, ensuring every detail was taken care of. The safari itself was breathtaking—our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and knew the best spots for wildlife viewing. We saw the Big Five up close, along with stunning landscapes that felt like something out of a dream. The accommodations were luxurious yet blended seamlessly with nature. What stood out most was their genuine passion for conservation and community support. I highly recommend Majestic Kenya Safaris for an unforgettable, world-class experience in Kenya!
