Trip overview

Ten days combining northern wilderness, the Masai Mara, and Indian Ocean beaches. Two nights in Samburu for species you won’t see anywhere else in Kenya, four nights in the Mara for proper Big Five viewing, then three nights on Diani Beach to recover. Road safari throughout with a final flight to the coast.

This combination works well. The safari portion delivers on wildlife, Samburu’s northern specialists and the Mara’s abundance. Then Diani provides actual beach quality, not just “you’ve finished safari so here’s some sand.” The water is swimmable, the properties are good, and three nights gives you time to properly relax rather than just one recovery day before flying home.

Ashnil Samburu sits along the Ewaso Ng’iro River where elephants cross daily. Sarova Mara is in the main Masai Mara National Reserve with good access to the reserve’s eastern sections. For the beach, you stay at Nomad Beach Resort (larger property with beachfront, pool, and spa).

The routing keeps driving manageable where possible. Only one long day on the road between Samburu and the Mara. The final transfer from Mara to the coast uses a flight to avoid two full days of driving.

This itinerary can also be changed to use domestic flights between parks, which leaves more time for wildlife.

Accommodations:

  • Samburu: Ashnil Samburu Camp (2 nights)
  • Masai Mara: Sarova Mara Game Camp (4 nights)
  • Diani Beach: Nomad Beach Resort (3 nights)

Your route

Samburu 2 nights · Masai Mara 4 nights · Diani 3 nights. Starts in Nairobi and ends in Mombasa.

Long drive days? Ask about flying between parks instead. It can save most of a day.

Day-by-day itinerary

Drive Time: 5-6 hours · Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel around 7:00 AM. Drive north through the central highlands with views of Mount Kenya when it’s clear. Pass through Nanyuki, then continue north as the scenery shifts from green farmland to drier scrubland and red soil.

Arrive at Ashnil Samburu Camp around midday. The camp sits right on the Ewaso Ng’iro River inside Buffalo Springs National Reserve, which connects to Samburu Reserve. Tented accommodation along the riverbank, you can watch elephants crossing from your tent. Check in, lunch overlooking the river, then first game drive at 4:00 PM.

The wildlife here is different from what you’ll see in the Mara. Reticulated giraffe have tighter patterns than the ones further south. Grevy’s zebra are bigger with narrower stripes and different proportions. Gerenuk stand on their back legs to reach leaves that other browsers can’t access. Beisa oryx with their straight horns. None of these appear outside this region. Lions and leopards work the riverine areas where there’s cover.

Dinner and overnight at Ashnil Samburu Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day in Samburu and Buffalo Springs reserves, they’re adjoining and your guide works across both. Early morning drive along the river when it’s cooler and animals are active. Elephants cross back and forth between the banks. Crocodiles sun themselves on exposed rocks. Hippos in the deeper pools.

Samburu gets a fraction of the visitors that the Mara does. When you find lions or leopards, you’ll often be the only vehicle there for a while. The northern specialists stay interesting, watching gerenuk balance on their hind legs, or seeing how Grevy’s zebra interact differently than plains zebra.

Back to camp around 10:30 for late breakfast. Pool, shade, river views during the heat. Out again at 4:00 PM until dark. Birdlife is excellent for dry-country species, vulturine guineafowl are particularly striking with their blue feathers.

Dinner and overnight at Ashnil Samburu Camp.

Drive Time: 10-11 hours via Nairobi · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Early breakfast and checkout, on the road by 7:00 AM. Long drive to the Masai Mara, route goes back through Nairobi (5-6 hours), then continues west to the Mara (about 5 more hours). Longest driving day of the safari but unavoidable, there’s no practical direct route between Samburu and the Mara.

Lunch stop in Nairobi or packed lunch depending on timing. Road is tarmac through Nairobi and most of the way to Narok, then rougher murram road into the reserve but manageable. Scenery opens into Maasai grazing land as you approach the reserve boundary.

Arrive at Sarova Mara Game Camp in the early evening. The camp sits in the main Masai Mara National Reserve with good access to the eastern sections. Tented accommodation with proper facilities. Settle in before dinner and get ready for the full days ahead.

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Three full days in the Mara with morning and afternoon drives. Early starts around 6:30 AM before it gets hot and while predators are still active. Lions are easy to find, the Mara has plenty of them. Leopards take more patience but show up regularly near the Mara River where there are big trees. Cheetahs use the open plains for hunting. Buffalo in big herds, elephants everywhere, rhinos around but less common.

If you’re visiting July through October, the migration will dominate everything. Over a million wildebeest plus zebra moving through from Tanzania. River crossings happen but they’re completely unpredictable, could see three in one morning or wait several days. Your guide maintains radio contact with other drivers and will get you there if activity starts building.

Outside those months, the resident wildlife is still excellent. Less crowded without the migration traffic too. The Mara River is worth extended time even without crossings, lots of hippos, big crocodiles, good birdlife along the water.

Hot air balloon safaris can be arranged if you book ahead, around $450 per person. They launch at dawn and finish with champagne breakfast in the bush. Worth doing if it fits your budget.

Three full days gives you proper time to explore different sections without rushing. By the third day you’re not checking boxes anymore, just enjoying being out there.

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

Travel Time: Drive to Nairobi (5-6 hours), fly to Mombasa (1 hour), drive to Diani (1.5 hours) · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Early morning game drive in the Mara, breakfast, then drive back to Nairobi. Arrive early afternoon and transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your flight to Mombasa. Afternoon flight lands at Moi International Airport, then road transfer south to Diani Beach.

Arrive at your beach property early evening. The Nomad Beach Resort is quite large, but it maintains high standards, beachfront location, good pool, spa facilities. It sits directly on the beach with white sand and swimming quality water.

Check in, settle into beach mode. Dinner at the property, Nomad Beach Resort has a restaurant.

Overnight at The Nomad Beach Resort.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Two full days at the beach. No schedule, no alarms. Diani has proper white sand and the reef offshore keeps the water calm and relatively clean. Swimming is actually good here, unlike some Kenyan beaches where the tide goes out too far or the water quality isn’t great.

Activities available if you want them: snorkeling trips to the reef, dhow sailing, kite surfing, stand-up paddleboarding. You can visit Shimba Hills National Reserve for forest elephants and rare sable antelope if you want one more wildlife fix. Wasini Island for dolphin watching. But most people after a week of early mornings and dusty roads just want to sit on the beach.

The resort has pools if you don’t feel like sand, plus spa treatments. Fresh seafood at the restaurant, the coast does excellent grilled fish and Swahili curries. Walk the beach, swim, read, sleep. Two days gives you time to actually relax rather than just one recovery day.

Overnight at The Nomad Beach Resort.

Drive Time: 1.5 hours to Mombasa Airport · Meals: Breakfast

Last morning at the beach depending on your flight time. Late breakfast, final swim, pack up. Transfer to Moi International Airport in Mombasa for your onward flight.

Most international flights leave from Nairobi, so you’ll likely connect through there. Afternoon Mombasa-Nairobi flights work with evening international departures. Alternatively some people fly out of Mombasa directly if their airline serves it, saves the extra hop back to Nairobi.

A Couple in December 2025 - 5 Stars We booked with Stanley and Majestic Safari for the 6-day luxury tour through Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Amboseli. The trip completely exceeded our expectations, even despite it not being ‘peak season’ we were able to tick off Africa’s Big 5 on the very first game drive. This was in no small part down to our guide, Bonnie, who was an essential part of tracking these animals - you have to request him if booking through Majestic. Each accommodation also exceeded our expectations in terms of location, comfort, quality and service of the staff. Being a first time safari for us, we weren’t sure what to expect - but selecting the luxury option was well worth it. All aspects of travel and organisation was seamless. Once booked, there was next to nothing for us to think about as we were in experienced hands - and we were glad to have partnered with Majestic as there was significantly more organisation required in the background than we originally realised. Stanley also went above and beyond the itinerary, picking us up from the airport late at night despite the tour not starting until a few days later and ensuring we had some food to take into the hotel. This was after providing us with in-depth packing lists and general guidance on exploring Nairobi. I couldn’t recommend Majestic enough and hope to arrange another trip with Stanley in the future.

A Beautiful Safari with an Excellent Guide – Just Check the Route First Majestic Kenyan Safaris gave us a wonderful Kenya experience, and our guide was genuinely lovely. He was calm, kind, and extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife, parks, and local environment, which made the safari both engaging and meaningful. One thing worth noting for future travellers is the itinerary structure. Over the six-day safari, the route involved long drives in a zig-zag pattern rather than a simple circular loop. This meant more transit time on some days. This was not the fault of the company or the guide, as the itinerary was clearly outlined, but something we wish we had paid closer attention to when booking. Overall, Majestic Kenyan Safaris were professional, warm, and well organised. With careful attention to route planning beforehand, they offer a truly memorable safari experience.

The most Unforgettable Safari Stanley Gichuki crafted the journey of dreams Thanks to our incredible guide, Bonie whose fearless spirit turned every mile into magic. He welcomed us in Samburu National Park and led us off the beaten path with a deep, soulful knowledge of the land, its stories, its rhythms, its wild heart. Samburu was our favorite in terms of landscape. We stood in awe in Samburu as reticulated giraffes swept across the horizon, watched Grevy’s zebras stride with quiet elegance, and felt the earth tremble beneath African elephants. We held our breath as a cheetah emerged from the tall grass, and we followed Kamau Boniethrough wet, treacherous tracks to where lions rule their hidden kingdom. Our journey continued into Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a sanctuary of hope, where we encountered the gentle wisdom of chimpanzees at the Jane Goodall, Sweetwater Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and witnessed the immense beauty of both white and black rhinos, alongside more elephants, more lions… and countless unforgettable moments. Our journey ended in the Maasai Mara . Our last drive was unforgettabel as we watched a cheetah devouring a thompson gazelle, leaving the rest of the kill to a fight between two jackals and a flock of vultures. We had a brief encounter with a leopard walking down a river and watched more lions enjoying their buffalo lunch. Truly memorable experiences. Kenya, you are once in a lifetime. Thank you

Safari with Majestick Kenya We just returned from a 9 days safari, and we enjoyed it very much. Everything was arranged very well, our driver/guide Bonnie was outstanding. The tour company did everything to be helpfull in picking up from the airport, taking us with their jeep to all the place we visited, and we had very nice game drives. We went to Samburu, Oj Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara. The lodges were great, good value for money and we were upgraded in 2 places. Thank you Majestick, and al your staff. We highly recommend you.

Amazing Safari Experience! Just got back from an amazing 7-day safari with Majestic Kenya Safaris! Our guide Samuel was fantastic - incredible wildlife knowledge and spotted animals from miles away. We saw the Big Five, including a pride of lions with cubs in the Maasai Mara. Everything was perfectly organized from airport transfers to accommodations. The mix of lodges and tented camps was great, and falling asleep to African bush sounds was magical. Vehicle was comfortable for the longer drives between parks. One activity got cancelled due to weather, but they quickly arranged something even better. Would definitely recommend to anyone planning a Kenya safari - unforgettable experience!

Best Safari experience! Majestic Kenya Safaris in Nairobi exceeded all my expectations! From the moment we booked, their team was incredibly professional and attentive, ensuring every detail was taken care of. The safari itself was breathtaking—our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and knew the best spots for wildlife viewing. We saw the Big Five up close, along with stunning landscapes that felt like something out of a dream. The accommodations were luxurious yet blended seamlessly with nature. What stood out most was their genuine passion for conservation and community support. I highly recommend Majestic Kenya Safaris for an unforgettable, world-class experience in Kenya!
