A Long Weekend Safari from Dubai: What You Can Fit In

Yes, you can do a safari from Dubai over a long weekend. Three days is enough for two nights in the Masai Mara, and four is better. Nairobi is about five to six hours away on a non-stop flight, and Kenya is one hour behind the UAE, so you will not need time to recover.

Here is what fits into each length, and when flying into the park is worth the extra cost. Prices below are “from” rates for six people between January and June, so a couple will pay more. All of the trips appear on our Kenya safaris from the UAE page.

Three days: the Mara only

Two nights in the Mara gives you one full day of game drives, plus time on arrival and departure. Our 3-day flying safari, from $1,350, is the best use of a short trip. You fly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport in about an hour rather than making the 5 to 6 hour drive each way, and the flights are included.

If you prefer to drive, the 3-day mid-range safari starts at $1,000 and the 3-day luxury safari at $1,400. On a road trip, the drive takes up much of your first and last days.

Four days: more time on the plains

A third night makes a big difference. The 4-day Mara trip, from $1,700, gives you two full days and the option of a dawn balloon flight for around $450 per person. If you want to fly as well, the 4-day fly-in safari starts at $2,020.

Five days: add Amboseli

Take one extra day and you can see two very different parks. The 5-day luxury safari, from $1,950, starts in Amboseli for its elephant herds and, on a clear morning, Kilimanjaro. It then moves to the Mara for two nights. The park is run by the Kenya Wildlife Service, and it is a good contrast to the Mara.

If you can stretch to a week, you could add Diani Beach. For a special occasion, our 5-star and VIP safaris give you a higher level of camp with more time in each park.

Making the timing work

Your flight times decide what is possible. Our safaris leave Nairobi in the morning, so an evening arrival means one night in the city first. If you can, take an early flight out of the UAE. Work backwards on the way home too, because a road trip from the Mara returns to Nairobi later in the day.

Our guide to flights from the UAE compares the airlines. Once you have your dates, apply for your eTA in good time, and check Kenya travel requirements for UAE citizens and residents, including the current Saudi rule if you are likely to travel there soon after.

When to go

UAE summer overlaps with Kenya’s long dry season, and the migration is usually in the Mara from late July to October. The Mara sits on high ground, so early drives can be cold, and you will want a warm layer. The official Magical Kenya site has more on the reserve.

A private trip is not about length. If you want to know what you are paying for, read what a VIP safari really includes.
