Itinerary

  • Day 1: Depart Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve

    Travel Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Your Kenyan adventure begins with a scenic drive from Nairobi to Samburu National Reserve. The drive offers a fascinating transition through varied landscapes, allowing you to witness the gradual transformation from the green highlands around the capital to the rugged, semi-arid terrain of Samburu. Along the way, your guide will point out interesting sights and wildlife, and you may make a brief stop in a local town.

Upon arrival at Samburu Sopa Lodge, you'll have time to settle into your room and enjoy a refreshing lunch with panoramic views of the surrounding Samburu hills and valleys.

In the late afternoon, you'll set out on your first game drive in Samburu National Reserve. Keep an eye out for the "Samburu Special Five" – Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich – as your guide shares insights into their unique adaptations to the harsh environment. As the sun sets, return to the lodge for dinner and your first night surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

  • Day 2: Full Day Exploring Samburu

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Wake early to make the most of the cool morning hours when animals are most active. After a quick cup of coffee or tea, head out for a morning game drive. Scan the landscape for big cats, such as lions and leopards, and watch as elephants make their way to the life-giving Ewaso Nyiro River. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast and some time to relax during the heat of the day.

In the afternoon, set out on another game drive, focusing on the smaller and more elusive inhabitants of the reserve. Your guide will help you spot and identify various antelope species, primates, and the hundreds of bird species that call Samburu home. As the day cools, you might encounter the peculiar gerenuk, standing on its hind legs to browse.

Return to the lodge as the sun sets for dinner and your second night in Samburu Sopa Lodge.

  • Day 3: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

    Travel Time: 3-4 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After an early breakfast, depart Samburu and make the journey to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Along the way, you'll witness the transition from the arid scrubland of Samburu to the lush, verdant terrain of the central highlands, with the majestic Mount Kenya occasionally visible on the horizon.

Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp in time for a delicious lunch, with the camp's waterhole serving as a captivating backdrop. After settling into your tent, you'll visit Ol Pejeta's rhino sanctuary, home to both black and white rhinos, including the world's last two remaining northern white rhinos. Your guide will share the critical conservation efforts underway to protect these endangered species.

As the afternoon light begins to fade, embark on a game drive through the 90,000-acre conservancy, keeping an eye out for the Big Five and other wildlife.

Dinner at Sweetwaters is served with a view of the waterhole, where you might spot animals coming to drink as night falls.

  • Day 4: Full Day Exploring Ol Pejeta

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Start your day with a morning game drive, when the predators are most active. The diverse landscape of Ol Pejeta supports a thriving population of lions, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard, so keep your eyes peeled. Your guide will help you spot and identify the various species, explaining their roles in the ecosystem.

After a late breakfast, visit the chimpanzee sanctuary, a refuge for chimps rescued from the illegal wildlife trade. Although not native to Kenya, these charismatic primates serve as ambassadors in the fight against wildlife trafficking. Learn about their individual stories and the broader issues surrounding this global problem.

In the afternoon, enjoy another game drive, this time focusing on how Ol Pejeta balances wildlife conservation with sustainable cattle ranching. Discover the innovative approach that has made the conservancy a model for responsible land use and environmental stewardship.

In the evenings, you'll have the chance to visit a local Maasai village, learning about their age-old traditions and way of life.
