5-Day Luxury Kenya Safari: Amboseli and Masai Mara

Starts from

$1,400 pp (USD)

Overview

This 5-day luxury safari offers an immersive experience in two of Kenya’s most celebrated national parks: Amboseli and the Masai Mara. The journey combines breathtaking landscapes, exceptional wildlife viewing, and the epitome of safari luxury.

Your adventure begins in Amboseli National Park, renowned for its large elephant herds and unparalleled views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here, you’ll spend two nights in a luxurious lodge, enjoying gourmet cuisine and expertly guided game drives. Amboseli’s unique ecosystem, with its mix of dusty plains and lush swamps, supports a diverse array of wildlife, including over 400 bird species.

The safari then takes you to the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve for another two nights. The Mara is synonymous with African safari, offering some of the continent’s best big cat viewing opportunities. If your visit coincides with the Great Migration (typically July to October), you may witness the spectacular sight of thousands of wildebeest and zebras crossing the Mara River.

Throughout your journey, you’ll travel in a custom-built 4×4 safari vehicle, ensuring comfort and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Your experienced driver-guide will share in-depth knowledge about the wildlife, ecosystems, and local cultures you encounter.

This safari includes daily game drives in both parks, giving you ample opportunity to spot the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) and numerous other species. You’ll also have the chance to engage with local Masai culture through an optional village visit.

Optional activities, such as a hot air balloon safari over the Mara, can be arranged to further enhance your experience.

Accommodations:

  • Amboseli: Ol Tukai Lodge or Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge (2 nights)
  • Masai Mara: Muthu Keekorok Lodge (2 nights)

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

    Travel Time: About 4-5 hours

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Your luxury safari begins with a morning pick-up from your Nairobi hotel or the airport. You'll travel in a comfortable, custom-built 4x4 safari vehicle with an experienced driver-guide. The drive to Amboseli takes you south along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, offering views of rural Kenya and the Athi Plains.

As you leave the city behind, you'll pass through small towns and villages, giving you a glimpse of everyday Kenyan life. Your guide will provide commentary on the changing landscapes and local cultures. You'll make a stop at a scenic viewpoint overlooking the vast Athi Plains, where you can stretch your legs and enjoy a packed snack.

Continue your journey, passing by Emali and turning west towards Amboseli. The road becomes more rugged as you approach the park, adding to the safari adventure. Keep an eye out for wildlife along the roadside as you near Amboseli.

Arrive at your luxury lodge – either Ol Tukai Lodge or Amboseli Serena Safari Lodge – in time for lunch. Both lodges offer stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, weather permitting.

After settling in and enjoying a gourmet lunch, take some time to relax and explore the lodge's facilities. Later, embark on your first game drive in Amboseli National Park. The park is famous for its large elephant herds, often framed against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro. Your guide will also help you spot other wildlife such as lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and a variety of antelope species.

Return to the lodge for a gourmet dinner and overnight stay. Both lodges offer elegant accommodation with modern amenities and traditional African touches.

  • Day 2: Full day in Amboseli

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Rise early for a morning game drive, when animals are most active. Amboseli's sparse vegetation makes wildlife spotting particularly rewarding. Watch elephants wade through the marshes, their tusks reflected in the glassy water. Your guide will share insights into elephant behavior and the park's unique ecosystem.

Return to the lodge for a leisurely breakfast and some relaxation time. You might choose to enjoy the lodge's pool or spa facilities, or simply relax on your private veranda, watching for animals at the nearby waterhole.

After lunch at the lodge, head out for another game drive. In addition to elephants, Amboseli is home to over 400 bird species. Your guide will help identify some of these, from the massive Kori bustard to tiny, colorful sunbirds.

As the day cools, find a scenic spot to watch the sunset, perhaps with Kilimanjaro as a backdrop. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

  • Day 3: Amboseli to Masai Mara National Reserve

    Travel Time: About 7-8 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After an early breakfast, check out and begin your journey to the Masai Mara. This long but scenic drive will take you through the heart of Kenya, offering a chance to see the country's diverse landscapes and rural life.

Head north towards Nairobi, then west through the Great Rift Valley. You'll make a stop at a viewpoint overlooking the valley, where your guide will explain the geological significance of this massive fault line.

Continue through the towns of Narok and Bomet, where you'll see traditional Masai settlements and perhaps spot some wildlife along the way. You'll have a packed lunch en route, stopping at a scenic location.

Arrive at the Masai Mara in the afternoon and check into your luxury accommodation – Muthu Keekorok Lodge or similar.

After a short rest, set out for an afternoon game drive in the Masai Mara. The Mara's expansive savannah is home to an incredible density of wildlife. Your expert guide will search for the big cats – lions, leopards, and cheetahs – that have made the Mara famous.

Return to camp for a gourmet dinner, perhaps followed by drinks around the campfire under the vast African sky.

  • Day 4: Full Day in Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Wake before dawn for an optional hot air balloon safari (additional cost). Float silently over the plains as the sun rises, watching wildlife from above. The flight is followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush.

If not ballooning, enjoy an early morning game drive when predators are active. Return to camp for breakfast and some leisure time.

After lunch, embark on another game drive. The Mara ecosystem supports an astonishing variety of wildlife. In addition to the big cats, you might see elephants, giraffes, hippos, and numerous antelope species. If you're visiting during the migration season (typically July to October), you might witness the spectacular wildebeest crossings at the Mara River.

As the sun sets, return to the camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Optional Masai Village Visit: You may choose to visit a traditional Masai village to learn about the culture and customs of these iconic pastoralists who have long coexisted with wildlife in the Mara ecosystem.

  • Day 5: Masai Mara to Nairobi

    Drive Time: About 5-6 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Enjoy a final early morning game drive in the Mara, soaking in the sights and sounds of the awakening savannah. Return to camp for breakfast and check out.

Begin your journey back to Nairobi, retracing your route through the Great Rift Valley. You'll have a packed lunch en route, stopping at a scenic location. This drive offers a last chance to see Kenya's beautiful landscapes and perhaps spot some wildlife along the way.

Arrive in Nairobi in the late afternoon, where you'll be transferred to your hotel or the international airport, marking the end of your luxury Kenya road safari.
