Plan your trip between June and October for the best wildlife viewing. This dry season brings animals to water holes, making them easier to spot. It’s also when the wildebeest migration happens in the Masai Mara. If you want better rates and fewer tourists, try January to March. The short rains in November make the grass green and bring lots of baby animals, which is lovely to see. Remember that popular lodges get booked up to a year ahead during peak times, so book early. Nonetheless, Kenya is a good safari destination all year round. So whether you book your safari in January or in December, you will still get a worthwhile experience.
Mid-range tours typically cost between $250-400 per person per day, including lodging, meals, guides, and park fees. Luxury trips can run $500-1000 daily, offering high-end lodges and extra comforts. Budget options start around $150-200 per day but might mean basic camps and shared vehicles. Remember to factor in flights, visas, tips, and personal expenses. A quality 7-day trip usually lands between $2,000-3,500 per person, though prices change with seasons.
Both have their charm. Driving lets you see the countryside, villages, and changing landscapes. You’ll spend 4-6 hours between parks, which some find tiring but others love for spotting random wildlife. Flying saves time, giving you extra hours in the parks, but costs more – expect to pay $200-400 per flight. For longer trips covering distant parks like Masai Mara and Tsavo, mixing drives and flights often works best.
Keep it simple. Bring neutral-colored clothes (avoid bright colors and pure white), a warm jacket for morning drives, good walking shoes, and a hat. You’ll want sunscreen, bug spray, and basic medicines. Pack a good camera with extra batteries and a long lens if you have one. Many lodges have laundry service, so you don’t need tons of clothes. Don’t forget adapters for electronics – Kenya uses the British-style three-pin socket.
Adding beach days in Diani or Watamu after your safari is very common and safe. These beach towns have good hotels, nice restaurants, and plenty to do. The water is warm year-round, and the beaches are beautiful. Most folks spend 5-7 days on safari then 3-4 days at the beach. You can fly directly from the Masai Mara to the coast, saving travel time. Just watch out for the midday sun – it’s stronger than you might expect.
A good first trip needs at least 6-7 days to see the main parks without rushing. Most people spend 2-3 days in the Masai Mara, 2 days in Amboseli or Tsavo, and maybe a day at Lake Nakuru. If you want to add the northern parks like Samburu or beach time, plan for 10-14 days total. Remember that moving between parks takes time, and you’ll want some downtime to enjoy the lodges.
Standard packages cover your lodging, meals, game drives, park fees, guide, and transport between parks. They usually don’t include drinks (except water), tips, visas, or personal items. Some include laundry and Wi-Fi, others charge extra. Optional activities like balloon rides, village visits, or night games drives usually cost extra – about $40-500 depending on the activity. Always read the “not included” list carefully before booking.
Private tours give you more freedom with timing and stops, plus your own guide and vehicle. They cost more but work great for families or friends traveling together. Group tours (usually 6-8 people) cost less and can be fun for meeting other travelers. The game viewing is similar either way. For first-timers, a small group tour often provides good value. If you want flexibility or have special interests, go private.
Many lodges welcome kids and some run special programs for them. Children usually love watching animals and learning from guides. Pick lodges with pools and plan shorter game drives – most kids get tired after 3-4 hours. Some places have age limits or restrictions for game drives. Most work best for kids over 6 who can sit quietly in vehicles. Family rooms or connecting rooms are available at many lodges.
Luxury lodges offer bigger rooms, better views, gourmet food, and extras like spa services or private decks. They often sit in prime locations and limit guest numbers. Mid-range places are still comfortable with good beds, hot showers, and decent food, but simpler. The wildlife viewing is similar from both – animals don’t care what you paid for your room. Pick based on what matters to you – many travelers mix lodges to keep costs reasonable.
