Majestic Kenya Safaris

4-Day Fly-in Masai Mara Luxury Safari

Starts from

$2,020 pp (USD)

Overview

This four-day fly-in safari focuses entirely on the Masai Mara, Kenya’s most famous wildlife reserve. Flying in from Nairobi means you skip the long drive and maximize your time on game drives. Three full days in the Mara gives you solid coverage of the reserve with enough flexibility to follow the wildlife and explore different areas.

The Mara needs no introduction. Big cats are everywhere, from lions in large prides to cheetahs hunting the plains and leopards working the riverine woodland. Elephants, buffalo, giraffe, and countless plains game fill the landscape. If you’re visiting between July and October, you’ll catch the migration when over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra cross from Tanzania. Outside those months, the resident wildlife is still exceptional.

Flying in and out on scheduled flights makes sense. You’ve already committed to getting to Kenya, so spend your time watching animals instead of sitting in a vehicle for five or six hours. Mara Serena sits on a hilltop with panoramic views across the reserve, offering comfortable accommodation while still feeling like you’re on safari.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Masai Mara National Reserve

Flight Time: Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

You'll be picked up from your Nairobi hotel or airport and transferred to Wilson Airport for your morning flight to the Mara. The flight takes under an hour in a light aircraft, crossing the Rift Valley with good views of the escarpment and changing landscape below. Most flights make one or two stops at different airstrips, so the exact time varies depending on which strip you're landing at.

Once you land, your guide meets you at the airstrip for the short transfer to camp. After checking in and having lunch, there's time to settle in before the late afternoon game drive. Your first outing introduces you to the Mara's rolling grasslands dotted with acacia trees and the sheer density of wildlife. Lions, elephants, buffalo, and plains game are standard viewing even on day one. The guides stay in radio contact, sharing information about what's happening across the reserve.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Serena Safari Lodge.

  • Day 2: Full Day in Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The full day starts with an early breakfast followed by a morning game drive. This is when predators are most active and the light is best for photography. Lions are easy to find here, often in prides of ten or more. Cheetahs prefer the open plains where they can use their speed. Leopards take more work but sightings happen regularly, particularly near the Mara River and in patches of woodland. Your guide reads the landscape and animal behavior to put you in the right place.

You'll return to camp for lunch and rest during the heat of the day. The afternoon game drive continues exploring, maybe focusing on the Mara River where hippos fill the pools and large crocodiles rest on the banks. Even without migration crossings, the river attracts different wildlife and birds. The forest along the banks creates a completely different habitat from the open grassland. Over 500 bird species have been recorded in the Mara, including an impressive number of raptors.

  • Day 3: Full Day in Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Your second full day in the Mara. By now your guide knows what you're most interested in and can adjust accordingly. Some people want maximum big cat viewing, others are into birds or just want to sit and watch the general flow of wildlife. The morning drive might take you to new areas or back to productive spots from the previous days. The Mara is large enough that you can cover different territory each time.

Options today include a full-day game drive with a picnic lunch out in the reserve, which gives you more flexibility to follow wildlife movements without rushing back for meals. July through October is migration season, and if the herds are around, the activity can be intense. River crossings are dramatic and unpredictable. Outside migration months, the resident populations of all species remain strong. Optional activities include a hot air balloon safari at dawn or visiting a nearby Maasai village to learn about their culture and relationship with the wildlife.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Serena Safari Lodge.

  • Day 4: Masai Mara to Nairobi

Flight Time: Approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour

    Meals: Breakfast

Early morning game drive before breakfast gives you one last chance to see anything you've missed or revisit favorite areas. The early hours are prime for wildlife activity before the day heats up. After the drive you'll return to camp for breakfast and check out. Transfer to the airstrip for your mid-morning or late morning flight back to Nairobi, depending on the schedule.

You'll land at Wilson Airport where you'll be met and transferred to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward flight, or to your Nairobi hotel if you're staying on. Most international flights from Nairobi leave in the evening, which works well with the morning Mara departures. If you have an early morning flight out of Kenya, you'll need to overnight near the international airport.
