Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

    4 - 5 Hour Drive
    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Your safari adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel or the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Meet your experienced guide and embark on a scenic drive to Amboseli National Park. As you leave the city behind, watch the landscape transform from urban sprawl to rural villages and finally to the African bush. Arrive at your budget tented camp in time for lunch and a short rest.

In the afternoon, set out for your first game drive in Amboseli. Keep your eyes peeled for the park's famous large elephant herds, often seen against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your guide will help you spot other wildlife like zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes.

As the sun sets, painting the sky in vibrant hues, return to camp for dinner and an overnight stay under the star-filled African sky.

  • Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

    Game Drives
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Wake up early to the sounds of the African bush coming alive. After a quick coffee or tea, head out for a morning game drive when animals are most active. Look for predators like lions and cheetahs returning from their nightly hunts, and elephant herds making their way across the plains.

Return to camp for a late breakfast and some leisure time. In the afternoon, embark on another game drive, this time including a visit to Observation Hill. This vantage point offers panoramic views of the entire park, including its swamps, plains, and (on a clear day) Mount Kilimanjaro. It's an excellent spot for photography.

As you explore, your guide will share insights about the park's ecosystem and conservation efforts. End the day with dinner at camp and perhaps some stargazing in the clear African sky.

  • Day 3: Amboseli to Lake Nakuru National Park

    6 - 7 Hour Drive
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After an early breakfast, bid farewell to Amboseli and begin the journey to Lake Nakuru National Park. This is a long travel day, but you'll pass through diverse landscapes and local villages, offering glimpses into rural Kenyan life. Stop for a picnic lunch en route. Arriving at your lodge or camp near Lake Nakuru in the mid-afternoon, you'll have time to freshen up before heading out for a game drive.

Lake Nakuru is renowned for its flamingos, which often create a pink fringe around the shoreline. It's also one of the best places in Kenya to spot both black and white rhinos. Your guide will explain the park's unique ecosystem and its importance as a bird sanctuary. As the day winds down, find a scenic spot to watch the sunset over the lake before returning to your accommodation for dinner.

  • Day 4: Full Day in Lake Nakuru National Park

    Game Drives
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Start your day with an early morning game drive. Lake Nakuru is home to over 400 species of birds, so this is a perfect time for birdwatching. Look out for pelicans, cormorants, and the African fish eagle. The park is also home to Rothschild's giraffes, zebras, and occasionally leopards. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast and some relaxation time.

In the afternoon, head out for another game drive, focusing on areas you haven't yet explored. Your guide will help you identify different animal tracks and droppings, enhancing your bush skills. Keep an eye out for the park's rhino population, one of the largest in Kenya. End the day with a sundowner at a scenic spot before returning to your lodge for dinner.

  • Day 5: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

    5 - 6 Hour Drive
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, check out and begin the journey to the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. This drive offers stunning views of the Great Rift Valley along the way. You'll arrive at your tented camp in time for lunch. Take some time to settle in and perhaps have a short rest.

In the afternoon, set out for your first game drive in the Mara. The reserve's vast savannah is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Even on this introductory drive, you might spot some of the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino).

Your guide will explain the Mara ecosystem and its crucial role in the Great Migration. As the sun sets, return to camp for dinner and fall asleep to the sounds of the African night.

  • Day 6: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Game Drives
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Rise early for a full day of game viewing. After a quick coffee and some cookies, head out at first light when predators are most active. This morning drive offers excellent chances to see big cats on the hunt. Return to camp for a late breakfast and some downtime during the heat of the day.

After lunch, set out again for an afternoon drive. Today's focus will be on finding the Big Five, but you'll also learn about smaller creatures and the Mara's rich plant life. If you're visiting during the Migration season (typically July to October), you might witness thousands of wildebeest and zebras on their perilous journey.

Your guide will position you for the best viewing opportunities while explaining this incredible natural phenomenon. End the day with a sundowner at a scenic spot before returning to camp for dinner.

  • Day 7: Another Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Game Drives or Optional Activities
    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today offers some flexibility. For those seeking an extra thrill, there's an optional hot air balloon safari at dawn (extra cost applies). This incredible experience offers a bird's eye view of the savannah and usually concludes with a champagne breakfast in the bush. If you prefer to stay grounded, enjoy another early morning game drive.

After breakfast at camp, you have the option to visit a local Maasai village. Here, you can learn about Maasai culture, see traditional dances, and perhaps purchase handmade crafts.

In the afternoon, enjoy another game drive, venturing into different parts of the reserve. Your guide will continue to help you spot and identify animals, birds, and plants. Look for scenes of high drama - perhaps a river crossing or a predator stalking its prey. Return to camp for dinner and your last night in the Mara.

  • Day 8: Masai Mara to Lake Naivasha

After breakfast, bid farewell to the Masai Mara and journey to Lake Naivasha. This freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley offers a tranquil contrast to the bustling savannah. You'll arrive at your lodge in time for lunch. In the afternoon, enjoy a boat ride on the lake. You're likely to see hippos wallowing in the shallows and a variety of waterbirds, including fish eagles, pelicans, and cormorants.

If time and weather permit, you might also visit Crescent Island, a private game sanctuary where you can walk among animals like zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes. As the sun sets over the lake, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Dinner and overnight stay at Naivasha Kongoni Lodge.

  • Day 9: Lake Naivasha to Nairobi

    2 - 3 Hour Drive
    Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

On your final day, enjoy a leisurely breakfast at the lodge. Depending on your departure time, you might have the opportunity for a short morning walk along the lakeshore to spot some of the area's 400+ bird species. Then, begin the drive back to Nairobi.

If time allows, you could stop at a curio shop for some last-minute souvenir shopping. You might also have the option to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant in Nairobi (own expense) before being transferred to the airport for your departure flight. As you leave Kenya, you'll take with you unforgettable memories of its stunning landscapes, incredible wildlife, and warm hospitality.
