4-5 Hour Drive · Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Your Kenyan adventure begins with an early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Meet your guide and set off for Amboseli National Park, known for its large elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The drive takes you south across the Athi Plains and into Maasai country. You’ll pass small towns and villages, with glimpses of local life. As you approach Amboseli, the land becomes drier, dotted with acacia trees and the occasional Maasai boma (homestead).

Arrive at Kibo Safari Camp, a budget-friendly tented camp, in time for lunch. The camp has comfortable furnished tents with en-suite bathrooms and a view of Mount Kilimanjaro on clear days.

After settling in, head out on an afternoon game drive. Keep your eyes peeled for elephants against the backdrop of Africa’s highest peak, as well as zebras, wildebeest, and giraffes. Your guide will explain how Amboseli is fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro’s snowmelt.

As the sun sets, return to camp for dinner in the open-air dining area, then fall asleep to the distant calls of hyenas and perhaps the roar of a lion.

Full Day Game Drives · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Spend two full days exploring Amboseli. Each day begins with an early wake-up around 5:30 AM. After a quick coffee or tea, head out for a morning game drive when animals are most active.

Look for predators returning from their nightly hunts: you might spot a cheetah scanning the plains or a pride of lions resting after a kill. Watch elephant herds crossing the plains, often with calves in tow. Your guide will position the vehicle for the best photos, with Kilimanjaro behind (weather permitting).

Return to camp for a late breakfast around 9:30 AM, then relax during the heat of the day by the pool, with a book, or with a nap in your tent.

After lunch, set out for an afternoon game drive around 3:30 PM. Visit different areas of the park, including Observation Hill, with panoramic views over the swamps fed by Kilimanjaro’s snowmelt that sustain wildlife in the dry season.

Look out for some of Amboseli’s less famous residents, such as the long-necked gerenuk, the colourful lilac-breasted roller, or giraffes browsing on acacia trees.

On one afternoon, you may have the option to visit a local Maasai village to learn about their traditional way of life, see their beadwork, and perhaps join in a jumping dance.

Evenings are spent back at camp, with dinner and time around the campfire sharing the day’s sightings.

5-6 Hour Drive · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After an early breakfast, leave Amboseli for Lake Naivasha. The drive takes you through more of rural Kenya, as the dry country gives way to greener farmland. Your guide will stop for photos or to stretch your legs.

Arrive at Naivasha Kongoni Lodge, a budget-friendly lodge near the lake, in time for a late lunch. It has simple but comfortable rooms and a peaceful garden.

In the afternoon, enjoy an optional boat trip on Lake Naivasha, a freshwater lake in the Great Rift Valley. Spot hippos in the shallows and waterbirds including fish eagles, pelicans, and cormorants. Your boat captain will get you close to a pod of hippos while keeping a safe distance.

As the sun sets over the lake, return to the lodge for dinner, which often features fresh fish from the lake.

2-3 Hour Drive · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, take a short nature walk along the lakeshore. Lake Naivasha is home to over 400 bird species, including African fish eagles, pied kingfishers, and superb starlings.

Then head for Lake Nakuru National Park, driving through Naivasha town and along the floor of the Great Rift Valley.

Arrive at Punda Milias Nakuru Camp, a budget-friendly tented camp near the park, in time for lunch. The camp has comfortable tents with en-suite bathrooms and views of the surrounding acacia forest.

In the afternoon, set out for a game drive around Lake Nakuru. The park is famous for its flamingos, which often form a pink fringe around the shoreline, though numbers vary with water levels.

Lake Nakuru is also one of the best places in Kenya to spot both black and white rhinos, and your guide will explain the work done to protect them from poaching. You may also see baboons, waterbuck, impala, and buffalo, and even pythons in the dense woodland.

As the day winds down, watch the sunset over the lake before returning to camp for dinner.

5-6 Hour Drive · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After an early breakfast, set off for the Masai Mara National Reserve, with views of the Great Rift Valley along the way. You’ll pass through Narok, the last major town before the Mara, where Maasai people in red shukas go about their daily lives.

Arrive at Enchoro Wildlife Camp, a budget-friendly tented camp just outside the reserve, in time for a late lunch. The camp has comfortable tents with en-suite bathrooms and views of the surrounding savannah.

After a short rest, set out for your first game drive in the Masai Mara. You might find herds of zebra and wildebeest grazing, a family of elephants browsing acacia leaves, or predators getting ready for the evening hunt.

Return to camp as darkness falls for dinner.

Full Day Game Drives · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Spend the next two days exploring the Masai Mara. Early morning game drives start around 6:30 AM, just as the sun rises and predators are most active. You might see a lion pride on a hunt, or a leopard draped over a tree branch.

Return to camp for a late breakfast and some rest during the heat of the day. After lunch, head out again around 3:30 PM. Your guide will help you find the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino) as well as smaller animals like the bat-eared fox or the serval cat.

If you’re visiting during the migration season (typically July to October), you might see thousands of wildebeest and zebras crossing the plains and rivers.

One afternoon, you may have the option to visit a local Maasai village, see inside a traditional hut, and perhaps try throwing a spear or lighting a fire the Maasai way.

For the adventurous, there’s an optional early morning hot air balloon ride (at extra cost) on one of the days, with a champagne breakfast after landing.

Evenings are spent at camp, with dinner and stories around the campfire.

5-6 Hour Drive · Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Rise early for a final morning game drive in the Masai Mara, with a last chance for wildlife sightings as the sun rises over the plains.

After breakfast, begin the journey back to Nairobi, with final views of rural Kenya along the way.

Arrive in Nairobi in the late afternoon and transfer to your hotel for the night.

The day is free to explore Nairobi before your flight. Optional activities (at extra cost) include the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, where you can watch young orphaned elephants being fed and bathed, or the Giraffe Centre, where you can feed endangered Rothschild’s giraffes.

You might also visit the Karen Blixen Museum, former home of the “Out of Africa” author, or the National Museum of Kenya.

For last-minute souvenirs, Nairobi’s markets sell traditional crafts, colourful fabrics, and beaded jewellery.

Your safari ends with a transfer to the airport for your onward journey.
