The Best Time for a Kenya Safari, by Dutch School Holiday

If you are tied to Dutch school holidays, the summer holiday is the classic safari window, with Kenya’s long dry season and, from late July, the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara. The autumn holiday in October is often the best balance of weather, wildlife and price. Christmas works too, while the May holiday usually falls in the long rains.

Exact holiday dates depend on your region, so check them against the notes below. Every trip on our Kenya safaris from the Netherlands page can be moved around your dates.

Summer holiday

July and August are dry, grass is short and animals gather near water, which makes them easier to find. The migration usually reaches the Mara from late July. It is the busiest and most expensive time, and Mara entry for non-residents is reported at double the January to June rate, so book early. River crossings depend on the herds and cannot be promised.

With children, choose a route with shorter drive days. Our family safaris are planned that way.

Autumn holiday

October is still in the dry season, and the migration is often still in the Mara. The parks are quieter than in August. A week is enough for three parks, and with a non-stop flight you lose little time getting there.

Christmas holiday

The short rains usually fall in November and can run into December, so the country is green and many animals have young. It is a popular time, so book well ahead. A few nights at Diani Beach at the end works well with children.

May holiday

Late April and early May usually fall in the long rains. Parks are quiet and lodge rates are lower, but some roads can be difficult. It suits flexible travellers more than first-time visitors.

The spring holiday

February falls in a short dry season with strong game viewing, and it is in our lower price period. If your children’s school breaks in late February, this is a good option.
