Yes, you can fly non-stop from Amsterdam to Nairobi. KLM and Kenya Airways both operate the route, with about two flights a day, and the flight takes around 8 hours 25 minutes. That makes Kenya one of the easiest safari destinations to reach from the Netherlands.

The short journey means a shorter safari is worthwhile, too. Our Kenya safaris from the Netherlands page includes five-day trips as well as longer ones.

Who flies the route

FlightConnections lists KLM and Kenya Airways on the non-stop route, both SkyTeam members, with 14 flights a week. Departures from Schiphol range from late morning to early evening depending on the day, so most flights land in Nairobi in the evening or at night.

Time difference and jet lag

Kenya is two hours ahead of the Netherlands in winter and one hour ahead in summer. You will be tired after the flight, but you will not have jet lag to deal with, which helps families with children.

Your first night

Our safaris leave Nairobi in the morning, so an evening arrival usually means one night in the city first. We meet you at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and can book a hotel near your route out of town.

If your trip flies to the Mara or Samburu, that flight leaves from Wilson Airport, Nairobi’s domestic airport, and light aircraft limit luggage to about 15kg in a soft bag. Our guide to fly-in or road safaris explains the trade-offs.

Booking tips

The summer holiday is the busiest time on this route, and it is also the peak safari season. Book your safari first, because the best camps fill early from late July to October, then book flights. Our guide to the best time to go by Dutch school holiday compares the options.

Before you travel, sort your eTA and Kenya’s mandatory travel insurance, which we explain in Kenya travel requirements for Dutch citizens.
