Trip overview

This ten-day safari covers three very different areas of Kenya in a single trip. You start in Samburu in the dry north for three days, move south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy for two nights focused on rhinos, then finish with four days in the Masai Mara. Each stop has its own character and the combination gives you a broad picture of what Kenya has to offer.

Samburu holds species you won’t find further south including Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, and gerenuk. Ol Pejeta is one of the best places in East Africa to see both black and white rhinos. The Mara is the classic open grassland safari experience. Four nights there at the end gives you time to explore properly.

Accommodations:

  • Ashnil Samburu Camp (Samburu)
  • Sweetwaters Serena Camp (Ol Pejeta)
  • Mara Maisha Camp (Masai Mara)

Your route

Samburu 3 nights · Ol Pejeta 2 nights · Masai Mara 4 nights. Starts and ends in Nairobi.

Long drive days? Ask about flying between parks instead. It can save most of a day.

Day-by-day itinerary

Driving Time: 5-6 hours · Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Leave Nairobi early heading north through the central highlands. You cross the equator near Nanyuki then drop into the dry northern lowlands where the vegetation thins and the scenery takes on a different feel. Arrive at Ashnil Samburu Camp in time for lunch on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River.

The late afternoon game drive introduces you to the reserve. Samburu’s special northern species are the main draw and you’ll likely spot several on the first outing. Elephants are common along the river and lions patrol the woodland edges. A solid first drive to get oriented.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Samburu Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning and afternoon drives covering different areas. The Ewaso Nyiro River is the focal point, drawing wildlife through otherwise dry country. Early morning is the most productive time with predators active and temperatures cooler. Look out for Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk browsing on their hind legs, and Beisa oryx on the open plains.

The birdlife is excellent with several northern specials not found further south. Afternoon drives often produce leopard sightings along the riverbanks. The reserve has a quieter, more remote feel than the southern parks and the camps are generally less busy.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Samburu Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Second full day in Samburu. Your guide focuses on what you haven’t seen yet or revisits productive spots from yesterday. Samburu’s predators include lions, leopards, and cheetahs though sightings vary and the bush can be thick in places. Patience helps here more than in open savanna parks.

The river is always worth time in the late afternoon as animals come to drink before dark. Buffalo, waterbuck, and various antelope gather alongside the resident hippos and crocodiles. A good last evening in Samburu before heading south tomorrow.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Samburu Camp.

Driving Time: 3-4 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Head south to Ol Pejeta through Nanyuki with Mount Kenya visible to the east on clear days. A manageable drive compared to Day 1 and you arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp before lunch. Ol Pejeta is a private conservancy combining rhino conservation with cattle ranching, one of the more successful models of wildlife and land use in Kenya.

The afternoon drive focuses on rhinos. Ol Pejeta holds East Africa’s largest black rhino population alongside a healthy white rhino population. There’s also a sanctuary for the last two northern white rhinos on earth, worth visiting. Lions, elephants, and plains game fill the rest of the conservancy.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day with morning and afternoon drives. Black rhinos are solitary and stay in thicker bush while white rhinos tend to be more social and visible in open grassland. Your guide knows the conservancy well and positions you for decent viewing of both. Early morning is the best time before the heat builds.

Optional visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary in the afternoon, the only place in Kenya to see chimps. It’s an interesting addition to what has mostly been savanna wildlife. General game viewing continues across the conservancy’s mixed habitat of grassland, riverine forest, and bush.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

Driving Time: 7-8 hours · Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Long drive west from Ol Pejeta across the Rift Valley and into Maasai country. Plan for a full day in the vehicle with an early start and a lunch stop along the way. The scenery changes significantly during the journey from highland farmland to open savanna. Arrive at Mara Maisha Camp in the late afternoon.

If there’s light left, a short evening drive follows. After Ol Pejeta’s enclosed conservancy the Mara’s scale and wildlife density are immediately obvious. Lions, elephants, buffalo, and giraffe spread across the open plains. Your guide works the radio to find out what’s happening across the reserve.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

First full day with morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are active. Lions are generally easy to find in the Mara. Cheetahs favour the open areas and leopards appear along the rivers and in woodland patches. Your guide stays in radio contact across the reserve to track what’s happening.

The Mara River holds hippos and large crocodiles year-round. Between July and October the wildebeest migration crossings happen along the river, though timing is never predictable. Outside migration the resident populations of zebra, wildebeest, topi, and gazelle remain substantial.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Second full day. Your guide adjusts the plan based on your interests. You can opt for a full-day drive with a picnic lunch for maximum time out in the reserve. The Mara is large enough that you can cover new ground each day without repeating yourself.

Optional dawn hot air balloon flight if booked in advance. It costs extra but gives a perspective on the scenery and wildlife that you can’t get from a vehicle. The afternoon continues with normal game viewing as the day cools.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Third full day in the Mara. Four nights in one camp lets you slow down and build on what you’ve seen over the previous days. Your guide will have a good sense of where specific animals are ranging and can track individuals across multiple outings. Morning drives remain consistently good throughout the stay.

Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon, which gives useful context to the communities living alongside the wildlife. The last evening drive is a good chance to take it all in before heading back to Nairobi tomorrow.

Dinner and overnight stay at Mara Maisha Camp.

Driving Time: 5-6 hours · Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Final morning game drive before breakfast, then pack up and head back to Nairobi. The drive east takes most of the day and you arrive by mid to late afternoon depending on traffic.

Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Evening departures work fine.

A Couple in December 2025 - 5 Stars We booked with Stanley and Majestic Safari for the 6-day luxury tour through Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha and Amboseli. The trip completely exceeded our expectations, even despite it not being ‘peak season’ we were able to tick off Africa’s Big 5 on the very first game drive. This was in no small part down to our guide, Bonnie, who was an essential part of tracking these animals - you have to request him if booking through Majestic. Each accommodation also exceeded our expectations in terms of location, comfort, quality and service of the staff. Being a first time safari for us, we weren’t sure what to expect - but selecting the luxury option was well worth it. All aspects of travel and organisation was seamless. Once booked, there was next to nothing for us to think about as we were in experienced hands - and we were glad to have partnered with Majestic as there was significantly more organisation required in the background than we originally realised. Stanley also went above and beyond the itinerary, picking us up from the airport late at night despite the tour not starting until a few days later and ensuring we had some food to take into the hotel. This was after providing us with in-depth packing lists and general guidance on exploring Nairobi. I couldn’t recommend Majestic enough and hope to arrange another trip with Stanley in the future.

A Beautiful Safari with an Excellent Guide – Just Check the Route First Majestic Kenyan Safaris gave us a wonderful Kenya experience, and our guide was genuinely lovely. He was calm, kind, and extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife, parks, and local environment, which made the safari both engaging and meaningful. One thing worth noting for future travellers is the itinerary structure. Over the six-day safari, the route involved long drives in a zig-zag pattern rather than a simple circular loop. This meant more transit time on some days. This was not the fault of the company or the guide, as the itinerary was clearly outlined, but something we wish we had paid closer attention to when booking. Overall, Majestic Kenyan Safaris were professional, warm, and well organised. With careful attention to route planning beforehand, they offer a truly memorable safari experience.

The most Unforgettable Safari Stanley Gichuki crafted the journey of dreams Thanks to our incredible guide, Bonie whose fearless spirit turned every mile into magic. He welcomed us in Samburu National Park and led us off the beaten path with a deep, soulful knowledge of the land, its stories, its rhythms, its wild heart. Samburu was our favorite in terms of landscape. We stood in awe in Samburu as reticulated giraffes swept across the horizon, watched Grevy’s zebras stride with quiet elegance, and felt the earth tremble beneath African elephants. We held our breath as a cheetah emerged from the tall grass, and we followed Kamau Boniethrough wet, treacherous tracks to where lions rule their hidden kingdom. Our journey continued into Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a sanctuary of hope, where we encountered the gentle wisdom of chimpanzees at the Jane Goodall, Sweetwater Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and witnessed the immense beauty of both white and black rhinos, alongside more elephants, more lions… and countless unforgettable moments. Our journey ended in the Maasai Mara . Our last drive was unforgettabel as we watched a cheetah devouring a thompson gazelle, leaving the rest of the kill to a fight between two jackals and a flock of vultures. We had a brief encounter with a leopard walking down a river and watched more lions enjoying their buffalo lunch. Truly memorable experiences. Kenya, you are once in a lifetime. Thank you

Safari with Majestick Kenya We just returned from a 9 days safari, and we enjoyed it very much. Everything was arranged very well, our driver/guide Bonnie was outstanding. The tour company did everything to be helpfull in picking up from the airport, taking us with their jeep to all the place we visited, and we had very nice game drives. We went to Samburu, Oj Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara. The lodges were great, good value for money and we were upgraded in 2 places. Thank you Majestick, and al your staff. We highly recommend you.

Amazing Safari Experience! Just got back from an amazing 7-day safari with Majestic Kenya Safaris! Our guide Samuel was fantastic - incredible wildlife knowledge and spotted animals from miles away. We saw the Big Five, including a pride of lions with cubs in the Maasai Mara. Everything was perfectly organized from airport transfers to accommodations. The mix of lodges and tented camps was great, and falling asleep to African bush sounds was magical. Vehicle was comfortable for the longer drives between parks. One activity got cancelled due to weather, but they quickly arranged something even better. Would definitely recommend to anyone planning a Kenya safari - unforgettable experience!

Best Safari experience! Majestic Kenya Safaris in Nairobi exceeded all my expectations! From the moment we booked, their team was incredibly professional and attentive, ensuring every detail was taken care of. The safari itself was breathtaking—our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and knew the best spots for wildlife viewing. We saw the Big Five up close, along with stunning landscapes that felt like something out of a dream. The accommodations were luxurious yet blended seamlessly with nature. What stood out most was their genuine passion for conservation and community support. I highly recommend Majestic Kenya Safaris for an unforgettable, world-class experience in Kenya!
