Majestic Kenya Safaris

7-Day Luxury Kenya Safari

Starts from

$4,400 pp (USD)

Overview

Seven days covering Amboseli and the Masai Mara with flights between parks. Two nights at the base of Kilimanjaro, then four nights in the Mara. Straightforward routing that hits Kenya’s two most famous parks without wasting time on roads.

Amboseli works as a starting point. The park is small enough to cover properly in two days, and the elephant herds against Kilimanjaro are exactly what most people have in mind when they book Kenya. Ol Tukai Lodge sits inside the park next to a swamp, so you get wildlife passing through all day even when you’re not on drives.

Four nights in the Mara gives you three full days for game viewing. Mara Serena is the only lodge inside the Mara Triangle, perched on a hill with views over the plains and river. The Triangle tends to have fewer vehicles than the main reserve and the wildlife density is solid. Between July and October you’re positioned well for migration river crossings.

Using flights between parks takes about 45 minutes per leg instead of five or six hours on rough roads. Makes sense at this price point.

Accommodations:

  • Amboseli: Ol Tukai Lodge (2 nights)
  • Masai Mara: Mara Serena Safari Lodge (4 nights)

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

    Flight Time: 45 minutes

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Morning pickup and transfer to Wilson Airport for your flight to Amboseli. The plane holds about 12 passengers and flies low enough that you get good views. Kilimanjaro shows up well before you land if it's clear.

Touch down at Amboseli airstrip around mid-morning. Transfer to Ol Tukai Lodge takes 10 minutes - it's the only lodge inside the park itself. The location next to a swamp means animals come through constantly. Elephants, buffalo, zebra drinking and feeding right in front of the rooms. Check in, lunch, then first game drive around 4:00 PM.

Amboseli is small at 392 square kilometers but everything concentrates around the swamps. Elephants are the main attraction - big tuskers, family groups, young bulls. The research program here has tracked these families since 1972. Also plenty of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, different antelope species. Lions take more work to find than in the Mara but they're around.

Dinner and overnight at Ol Tukai Lodge.

  • Day 2: Amboseli National Park

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Early start around 6:30 when Kilimanjaro is usually visible. The mountain typically shows at dawn, then clouds form around the summit by mid-morning. Your guide will set you up for the classic shot - elephants with the peak behind them. It's been done a million times but it works.

Morning around the swamps watching elephant families. These animals are well-habituated so you can get close. Back to the lodge for lunch and a break. The swamp is active all day from the lodge terrace, so you're still watching wildlife even during the midday rest.

Afternoon drive at 4:00. Observation Hill in the center of the park is worth climbing for views across the basin. Short walk, easy grade. Birdlife around the wetlands is good - pelicans, geese, herons, egrets. Cheetahs sometimes hunt on the dry lake bed.

Dinner and overnight at Ol Tukai Lodge.

  • Day 3: Amboseli to Masai Mara

    Flight Time: 1 hour

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Quick early drive if you want it, otherwise just breakfast and pack up. Transfer to the airstrip for your flight to the Mara. Usually routes through Nairobi with a fuel stop, then continues to the Mara. Total time about an hour.

Land at Mara Serena airstrip. The lodge is close, maybe 5 minutes. Mara Serena sits up on a hill overlooking the Mara Triangle - the western section of the reserve. It's the only lodge actually inside the Triangle, which gives you good access and views. Check in, lunch, then afternoon drive into the Triangle.

The difference from Amboseli is immediate. Much bigger space, way more animals. Lions, elephants, buffalo spread across the plains. The Mara River runs through the Triangle with hippos and crocodiles year-round. Wildlife density here is on another level.

Dinner and overnight at Mara Serena Safari Lodge.

  • Day 4: Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day with morning and afternoon drives. Start around 6:30 when it's cooler and predators are active. Lions are almost guaranteed - the Mara has lots of them. Leopards show up regularly near the rivers where there's tree cover. Cheetahs prefer the open plains for hunting. Buffalo in big herds, rhinos less common but present, elephants everywhere.

If you're there July through October, the migration will dominate. Over a million wildebeest crossing from Tanzania, creating the river crossings you see in documentaries. Completely unpredictable though - might see multiple crossings in a morning or wait days. Your guide stays in radio contact so if something's happening nearby you'll get there.

Outside those months the resident animals still deliver plenty. Actually less crowded without the migration crowds.

Dinner and overnight at Mara Serena Safari Lodge.

  • Day 5: Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Second full day covering different parts of the Triangle. The Mara River deserves extended time even without crossings - lots of hippos, big crocodiles, different bird species along the water. Worth an hour just sitting and watching.

By now your guide knows what you're interested in and will focus accordingly. Want to find rhinos? He knows where they've been lately. Looking for cheetahs? He'll head to the open plains where they hunt.

Hot air balloon rides available if you book ahead, around $450 per person. Early morning launch, then champagne breakfast in the bush after landing.

Dinner and overnight at Mara Serena Safari Lodge.

  • Day 6: Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Third full day. At this point you've seen most of what's around, so today is more about enjoying it than checking boxes. Spend an hour with a pride instead of rushing off. Watch hippos interact in the river. Take it slower.

The lodge has a pool, spa treatments available, decent food. You can skip an afternoon drive if you want and just relax with the views. Last night so make it count.

Dinner and overnight at Mara Serena Safari Lodge.

  • Day 7: Masai Mara to Nairobi

    Flight Time: 45 minutes

    Meals: Breakfast

Final morning drive, breakfast, pack up. Flight to Nairobi lands at Wilson around midday. Transfer to Jomo Kenyatta for international connections or to a city hotel if you're staying over.

Most US flights leave evening - KLM to Amsterdam, Ethiopian to Addis, Emirates and Qatar via Middle East. Day room near the airport works if you need somewhere to shower and wait.
