This nine-day northern circuit safari takes you through Kenya’s less-traveled northern reserves before finishing in the Masai Mara. You’ll spend time in Samburu tracking special northern species like Grevy’s zebra and reticulated giraffe, visit rhinos at Ol Pejeta Conservancy, search for more rhinos and flamingos at Lake Nakuru, then wrap up with three full days in the Mara. It’s a thorough loop covering different ecosystems and wildlife populations.
The routing works well. Samburu gets you into proper northern Kenya wilderness with species you won’t see further south. Ol Pejeta adds the rhino component plus chimpanzee viewing if you’re interested. Nakuru is compact and packs a lot into a small park. Then the Mara gives you three days to really explore the reserve without rushing. The mix of properties balances comfort and location across the circuit.
Accommodations:
Driving Time: Approximately 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
You'll leave Nairobi early heading north through the central highlands. The road climbs through pineapple and coffee country before crossing the equator at Nanyuki, then drops down into the drier northern lowlands. The landscape shifts from green farmland to scrubby semi-arid terrain dotted with termite mounds and flat-topped acacias. You'll reach Elephant Bedroom Camp in time for lunch.
The camp sits on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu. After settling in, your late afternoon game drive introduces you to northern Kenya's special wildlife. Samburu holds species you won't encounter further south including Grevy's zebra with their narrow stripes, reticulated giraffe with their geometric patterns, gerenuk standing on hind legs to browse, and Beisa oryx with their long straight horns. Elephants are common along the river, and lions and leopards work the woodland and grassland mix.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning and afternoon game drives explore different sections of the reserve. The Ewaso Nyiro River is the lifeline here, creating a green corridor through otherwise dry country. Early morning viewing is productive as animals come to drink and predators patrol the riverbanks. The birdlife is excellent with over 450 species recorded. You'll see plenty of vulturine guineafowl, unusual weavers and starlings, and various raptors including pygmy falcons and martial eagles.
Between drives you're back at camp for lunch and rest. The afternoon outing might take you to different habitat looking for leopards in the woodland or tracking a pride of lions across the plains. Samburu's predators have adapted to the conditions here and the guides know where to look. Buffalo, warthog, dik-dik, and impala provide plenty of prey. As the day cools you might catch elephants bathing in the river before sunset.
Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
Driving Time: Approximately 3-4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast you'll head south from Samburu, retracing part of yesterday's route before turning west toward Nanyuki and Ol Pejeta. The drive takes you back up to higher, greener country with Mount Kenya dominating the eastern horizon when the weather's clear. You'll arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp before lunch.
Ol Pejeta is a working conservancy combining wildlife protection with sustainable cattle ranching. The late afternoon game drive focuses on rhinos, both black and white. The conservancy hosts East Africa's largest black rhino population and you'll likely see several. There's also a sanctuary for the last two northern white rhinos on earth. Beyond rhinos, you'll encounter elephants, buffalo, plains game, and if you're lucky, lions or leopards. The conservancy also has a chimpanzee sanctuary you can visit.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
A full day in Ol Pejeta with morning and afternoon game drives. Early morning is best for rhino viewing when they're active and the light is good for photography. The conservancy's relatively small size means you can cover ground efficiently and your guide knows where different animals tend to be. Black rhinos are more solitary and stick to thicker bush while white rhinos are often in small groups on open grassland.
Optional visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary where rescued chimps from across Africa live in large forested enclosures. It's the only place in Kenya to see chimps. Back at camp for lunch, then the afternoon drive might focus on predators or just general game viewing. Lions are present and there's a decent leopard population though they're harder to spot. The mix of habitat from riverine forest to open grassland to rocky outcrops creates good diversity.

Driving Time: Approximately 3 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning departure takes you southwest toward the Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru. The drive drops down the dramatic Rift escarpment with viewpoints over the valley floor. Lake Nakuru appears below surrounded by forest and grassland. You'll arrive at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge in time for lunch, positioned on a hill overlooking the park.
After lunch and rest, your late afternoon game drive covers this compact park. Nakuru was established as a rhino sanctuary and both black and white rhinos are regularly seen. Rothschild's giraffes were introduced successfully and now there's a healthy population. The varied terrain from lake shore to acacia woodland to rocky cliffs holds lions, leopards, buffalo, waterbuck, and numerous other species. The lake supports pelicans and cormorants. Flamingos are less reliable than they once were but smaller numbers are usually present.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge.
Driving Time: Approximately 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
After breakfast you're heading west across the Mau Escarpment toward the Mara. The road climbs through highland forest before descending into Maasai country where the landscape gradually opens into the grasslands you associate with classic East African safari. You'll reach Sarova Mara Game Camp by early afternoon.
Once you've settled in and had lunch, your first Mara game drive begins in the late afternoon. Even on day one the wildlife density is immediately obvious. Lions are everywhere, often in large prides. Elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, and various antelope spread across the plains. The guides work radio networks so if something interesting is happening they'll know about it. Between July and October the migration brings over a million wildebeest plus zebra and gazelle, but outside those months the resident populations are still exceptional.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Your first full day in the Mara with morning and afternoon drives. Early starts put you out when predators are most active. Lions are easy to find, sometimes ten or more in a single pride. Cheetahs prefer open plains where they can use their speed. Leopards take more work but sightings happen regularly along the rivers and in woodland patches. Your guide reads animal behavior and positions you well for whatever's unfolding.
The Mara River cuts through the reserve with hippos filling the pools and large crocodiles on the banks. Even without migration crossings it's worth time here for the different habitat and species. Forest along the riverbanks attracts different birds and elephants browsing vegetation. Between drives you're back at camp for lunch. The afternoon continues exploring, maybe focusing on a different section of the reserve or tracking something specific your guide picked up on the radio.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day in the Mara. By now your guide knows what you're most interested in and can adjust accordingly. Some people want maximum big cat viewing, others are into birds or just want to sit and watch general wildlife flow. Morning drive might take you to new areas or back to productive spots from yesterday. The Mara is large enough that you can cover different territory each time without repeating.
Option for a full-day drive with picnic lunch out in the reserve which gives more flexibility to follow wildlife movements without rushing back for meals. If you're here during migration season between July and October, river crossings are dramatic but totally unpredictable. Herds gather on the banks for hours or days before something triggers the crossing. Outside migration months the resident animal populations remain strong. Optional hot air balloon safari at dawn or Maasai village visit to learn about their culture and relationship with wildlife.
Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Mara Game Camp.
Driving Time: Approximately 5-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Final early morning game drive before breakfast. One last chance to see anything you've missed or go back to favorite spots. The early hours are prime for wildlife activity before heat builds. After the drive you'll return to camp for breakfast and check out.
The journey back to Nairobi takes you east through the Rift Valley with different perspectives on the return trip. Good viewpoints for photos and stretching legs. You should arrive in Nairobi by mid to late afternoon depending on traffic. Drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for onward flights. Evening departures work fine. If you're flying out the next morning you'll need to overnight near the airport.
