Majestic Kenya Safaris

11-Day Luxury Kenya Road Safari

Starts from

$5,400 pp (USD)

Overview

Eleven days covering Kenya’s premier wildlife destinations in one logical northern-to-southern circuit. Start in Samburu for northern species, down to Ol Pejeta Conservancy for rhino and chimp conservation, through Lake Nakuru, across to the Masai Mara, then finish at Amboseli beneath Kilimanjaro. All road travel in a 4×4 safari vehicle.

This routing makes geographical sense – you work your way from north to south without backtracking. Samburu delivers reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, and other northern specialists. Ol Pejeta has the last remaining northern white rhinos plus a chimp sanctuary. Lake Nakuru adds both black and white rhino sightings. The Mara provides classic Big Five viewing. Amboseli finishes with elephants and mountain views.

Road safari means flexibility – stop for photos, adjust timing, watch the landscape transition between ecosystems. The drives are long on some days but manageable, and you’re traveling with the same guide throughout which builds rapport.

Accommodations use a mix of quality lodges and camps that balance comfort with value. All properties are well-positioned for wildlife access.

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Samburu

    Drive Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel around 7:00 AM. Drive north through the central highlands with views of Mount Kenya when it's clear. Pass through Nanyuki, then continue north as the landscape shifts from green farmland to drier scrubland and red soil.

Arrive at Samburu Sopa Lodge around midday. The lodge sits along the Ewaso Ng'iro River inside Samburu National Reserve. Check in, lunch, then first game drive at 4:00 PM.

Immediate difference in wildlife from southern Kenya. Reticulated giraffe with tighter geometric patterns. Grevy's zebra - bigger than plains zebra with narrower stripes and round ears. Gerenuk feeding on hind legs. Beisa oryx with long straight horns. None of these species exist south of here. Lions and leopards work the riverine areas.

Dinner and overnight at Samburu Sopa Lodge.

  • Day 2: Samburu

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day in Samburu. Early morning drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro River when animals are active. Elephants crossing back and forth, crocodiles sunning on banks, hippos in the deeper pools. Predators rest in the shade during midday heat but early morning catches them before they disappear.

Samburu gets significantly fewer visitors than the Mara. When you find lions or leopards, you'll often have the sighting to yourself for extended periods. The northern specialists remain interesting throughout - watching gerenuk balance on hind legs, or seeing Grevy's zebra interact with plains zebra where ranges overlap.

Back to lodge for late breakfast. Out again at 4:00 PM until dark. Good birdlife for dry-country species including vulturine guineafowl, yellow-billed hornbills, and various starlings.

Dinner and overnight at Samburu Sopa Lodge.

  • Day 3: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

    Drive Time: 3-4 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning game drive in Samburu, breakfast, then drive south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Nanyuki. Route retraces part of yesterday's drive but turns off toward the conservancy. Road is tarmac most of the way.

Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp for lunch. The camp sits inside Ol Pejeta Conservancy with views toward Mount Kenya. After settling in, afternoon game drive in the conservancy.

Ol Pejeta is private land, which allows more flexibility than national parks. The conservancy has all the Big Five including the last two northern white rhinos on earth - kept under 24-hour armed guard. There's also a chimp sanctuary here, unusual because chimps aren't native to Kenya.

Good predator populations, lots of plains game. Night drives are permitted in the conservancy, which you can't do in national parks.

Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

  • Day 4: Ol Pejeta Conservancy

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day in Ol Pejeta. Morning game drive focusing on different sections of the conservancy. Visit to the northern white rhino enclosure can be arranged - these are the last two individuals of their subspecies left alive. The sanctuary has round-the-clock security.

Visit to the chimp sanctuary where rescued chimps live in a protected environment. The chimps were rescued from across Africa and brought here. Not a zoo - large fenced area where they live naturally.

The conservancy also has black rhinos in good numbers, lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo. Game viewing is solid throughout. Walking safaris are possible with armed guides if you want to experience the bush on foot.

Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

  • Day 5: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru

    Drive Time: 2-3 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning game drive in Ol Pejeta, breakfast, then drive southwest to Lake Nakuru. Short drive on good roads through the highlands and down into the Rift Valley. Arrive at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge for lunch.

The lodge sits on a ridge inside Lake Nakuru National Park with panoramic views over the lake. After settling in, afternoon game drive around Nakuru.

The park is compact at 188 square kilometers and fully fenced, which has helped rhino populations recover significantly. Both black and white rhinos here - one of the few places in Kenya where you're likely to see both species in a single afternoon. Leopards are spotted regularly in trees around the park. Flamingo numbers vary with the lake's chemistry but can be spectacular when conditions are right.

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge.

  • Day 6: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara

    Drive Time: 4-5 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Early morning game drive in Nakuru - best time for predators and active rhinos. Return for breakfast, check out, then drive west to the Masai Mara through Narok. Road is tarmac to Narok, then rougher murram road into the reserve but manageable.

Arrive at Sarova Mara Game Camp or Mara Sopa Lodge for lunch. Sarova Mara sits in the Mara Triangle on the western side. Mara Sopa is on the eastern edge. Both are well-positioned properties. After settling in, late afternoon game drive into the reserve.

Wildlife density is immediately obvious. Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffe spread across the plains. This is what the Mara does - abundance as standard.

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp or Mara Sopa Lodge.

  • Days 7-8: Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Two full days in the Mara. Morning and afternoon game drives each day. Early starts around 6:30 AM when it's cooler and animals are most active. Lions are practically guaranteed - the Mara has healthy populations. Leopards require patience but sightings happen regularly near the Mara River. Cheetahs hunt on the open plains. Buffalo in massive herds, elephants everywhere, rhinos present but less common.

If you're here July through October, the migration dominates everything. Over a million wildebeest plus zebra crossing from Tanzania. River crossings are dramatic when they happen but completely unpredictable - might see three in a morning or wait days. Your guide maintains radio contact with other drivers and will get you there if activity builds.

Outside migration months, the resident wildlife still delivers excellent viewing. Actually less crowded without the seasonal rush. Hot air balloon safaris available if booked ahead (around $450 per person).

The Mara River deserves extended time even without crossings - hippo pods, large crocodiles, excellent birdlife along the water.

Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp or Mara Sopa Lodge.

  • Day 9: Masai Mara to Amboseli

Drive Time: 7-8 hours via Nairobi

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Early morning game drive in the Mara, breakfast, then long drive to Amboseli. Route goes back through Nairobi (5-6 hours), then continues southeast to Amboseli (another 4-5 hours). Longest driving day of the safari but unavoidable - there's no practical direct route between Mara and Amboseli.

Lunch stop in Nairobi or packed lunch depending on timing. Landscape changes dramatically as you leave the highlands and drop into drier country approaching Amboseli. Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon well before you reach the park.

Arrive at Kibo Safari Camp or AA Amboseli Lodge late afternoon. Both sit just outside the park boundary with views toward the mountain. Quick freshen up, then short evening game drive if time permits before dark.

Dinner and overnight at Kibo Safari Camp or AA Amboseli Lodge.

  • Day 10: Amboseli

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day in Amboseli. Early start around 6:30 AM to catch Kilimanjaro before clouds form. The mountain shows best at dawn, then usually disappears behind cloud cover by mid-morning. Your guide will position you for the classic shot - elephants with the peak behind them.

Amboseli is all about elephants. Large herds moving between the swamps, family groups with calves, big tuskers wandering solo. The research project here has tracked these families since 1972, so your guide can often identify individuals. Also plenty of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, various antelope.

Back to camp for lunch and midday rest. Out again at 4:00 PM. Observation Hill in the middle of the park offers panoramic views across the basin. Cheetahs sometimes hunt on the dry lake bed. Lots of water birds - pelicans, geese, herons around the swamps.

Dinner and overnight at Kibo Safari Camp or AA Amboseli Lodge.

  • Day 11: Amboseli to Nairobi

    Drive Time: 4-5 hours

    Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Final early morning game drive before breakfast. Last chance for elephants and Kilimanjaro at dawn. Return to camp around 9:00 AM, pack up, then drive back to Nairobi.

Lunch stop en route or packed lunch depending on preference. Arrive in Nairobi mid to late afternoon. Drop off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening international flights.
