Ten days covering Kenya’s premier wildlife destinations in one comprehensive circuit. This full-highlights safari visits Samburu’s northern wilderness, Ol Pejeta’s rhino and chimp conservation, Lake Nakuru for more rhinos, Lake Naivasha for boat safaris, the Masai Mara for Big Five viewing, and finishes at Amboseli beneath Kilimanjaro. All road travel in a 4×4 safari vehicle.
The routing flows logically from north to south with minimal backtracking. Start in Samburu for species you won’t see anywhere else, work down through the conservancy and Rift Valley lakes, across to the Mara for the main wildlife spectacle, then finish at Amboseli for elephants and mountain views before returning to Nairobi.
Accommodations mix boutique luxury with established quality properties. Elephant Bedroom Camp in Samburu sits along the river with tents under doum palms. Sweetwaters Serena in Ol Pejeta overlooks a waterhole with Mount Kenya views. Sarova Lion Hill at Nakuru has panoramic lake views. Sarova Mara in the Mara Triangle provides excellent positioning. Enashipai Resort at Naivasha offers spa luxury between safari sections. Ol Tukai in Amboseli sits inside the park next to swamps where elephants feed constantly.
This is the complete Kenya experience – every major ecosystem, all the key species, proper luxury throughout.
Accommodations:
Drive Time: 5-6 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel around 7:00 AM. Drive north through the central highlands with views of Mount Kenya when it's clear. Pass through Nanyuki, then continue north as the landscape shifts from green farmland to drier scrubland and red soil.
Arrive at Elephant Bedroom Camp around midday. The camp sits along the Ewaso Ng'iro River under doum palms - twelve tents scattered along the riverbank. The name comes from elephants that cross here regularly. Check in, lunch overlooking the river, then first game drive at 4:00 PM.
Immediate difference in wildlife. Reticulated giraffe with tighter geometric patterns. Grevy's zebra - bigger than plains zebra with narrower stripes and round ears. Gerenuk feeding on hind legs. Beisa oryx with long straight horns. None of these species exist south of here. Lions and leopards work the riverine areas where there's shade and cover.
Dinner and overnight at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Full day in Samburu National Reserve. Early morning drive along the Ewaso Ng'iro River when animals are active and temperatures are still reasonable. Elephants crossing back and forth, crocodiles sunning on banks, hippos in the deeper pools. Predators rest in the shade during midday heat but morning catches them before they disappear.
Samburu gets significantly fewer visitors than the Mara. When you find lions or leopards, you'll often have the sighting to yourself. The northern specialists remain interesting - watching gerenuk balance on hind legs to reach acacia leaves, or Grevy's zebra interacting with plains zebra where their ranges overlap.
Back to camp for late breakfast. Out again at 4:00 PM until dark. Good birdlife for dry-country species including vulturine guineafowl with their cobalt-blue plumage, yellow-billed hornbills, and various starlings. The camp does sundowners by the river on request.
Dinner and overnight at Elephant Bedroom Camp.
Drive Time: 3-4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning game drive in Samburu, breakfast, then drive south to Ol Pejeta Conservancy near Nanyuki. Route retraces part of yesterday's journey but turns off toward the conservancy. Road is tarmac most of the way, easy driving through the highlands.
Arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp for lunch. The camp sits inside Ol Pejeta Conservancy overlooking a waterhole with Mount Kenya rising behind when it's clear. Tented accommodation with proper luxury - large beds, en-suite bathrooms, private verandas. After settling in, afternoon game drive in the conservancy.
Ol Pejeta is private land with all the Big Five. The conservancy has the last two northern white rhinos on earth - kept under 24-hour armed guard in a protected enclosure. There's also a chimp sanctuary here, unusual because chimps aren't native to Kenya. The rescued chimps live in a large fenced area where they can be observed. Good predator populations, lots of plains game. Night drives are permitted in the conservancy.
Dinner and overnight at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.
Drive Time: 2-3 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning game drive in Ol Pejeta with visit to the northern white rhino sanctuary if desired. These are literally the last two individuals of their subspecies - Najin and Fatu. The conservancy maintains round-the-clock security. Also possible to visit the chimp sanctuary for scheduled viewing times.
After breakfast, drive southwest to Lake Nakuru. Short drive on good roads through the highlands and down into the Rift Valley. Arrive at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge for lunch.
The lodge sits on a ridge inside Lake Nakuru National Park with panoramic views over the lake. After settling in, afternoon game drive around Nakuru. The park is compact and fully fenced, which has helped both black and white rhino populations recover significantly. One of the few places in Kenya where you're likely to see both species in a single afternoon. Leopards are spotted regularly in trees. Flamingo numbers vary with the lake's chemistry but can be spectacular when conditions are right.
Dinner and overnight at Sarova Lion Hill Lodge.
Drive Time: 1.5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Early morning game drive in Nakuru - best time for predators and active rhinos. Return for breakfast, check out, then short drive south to Lake Naivasha. Easy drive through the Rift Valley on good tarmac.
Arrive at Enashipai Resort & Spa for lunch. The property sits on the lake shore with manicured gardens running down to the water. This is a resort rather than a safari camp - spa facilities, large pool, proper restaurant. More of a relaxation stop between the wildlife-focused sections.
After lunch, boat safari on Lake Naivasha. The lake is freshwater, different from the alkaline soda lakes in the Rift Valley. Large hippo populations, fish eagles, pelicans, cormorants along the shore. The boat takes you around the papyrus edges where birds concentrate. Optional walk on Crescent Island where you can get close to zebra, giraffe, wildebeest without a vehicle - no predators on the island.
Rest of the afternoon at leisure. Pool, spa treatments available, or just relax in the gardens. This is recovery time before heading to the Mara tomorrow.
Dinner and overnight at Enashipai Resort & Spa.
Drive Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Breakfast at the resort, then drive west to the Masai Mara through Narok. Road is tarmac to Narok, then rougher murram road into the reserve but manageable. Landscape opens into Maasai grazing land as you approach the reserve boundary.
Arrive at Sarova Mara Game Camp for lunch. The camp sits in the Mara Triangle on a ridge with views over the plains and Mara River in the distance. Tented accommodation with proper facilities - this is luxury camping, not roughing it. After settling in, late afternoon game drive into the Triangle.
Wildlife density is immediately obvious. Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffe spread across the grassland. The Mara Triangle is well-managed with lower vehicle numbers than the main reserve. Your guide will position you for good viewing as light drops.
Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Two full days in the Mara. Morning and afternoon game drives each day. Early starts around 6:30 AM when it's cooler and animals are most active. Lions are practically guaranteed - the Mara has healthy populations and they're visible. Leopards require more patience but sightings happen regularly near the Mara River where there's tree cover. Cheetahs hunt on the open plains. Buffalo in massive herds, elephants everywhere, rhinos present but less common.
If you're here July through October, the migration dominates everything. Over a million wildebeest plus zebra crossing from Tanzania. River crossings are dramatic when they happen but completely unpredictable - might see three in a morning or wait days. Your guide maintains radio contact with other drivers and will get you there if activity builds.
Outside migration months, the resident wildlife still delivers excellent viewing. Actually less crowded without the seasonal rush. Hot air balloon safaris available if booked ahead (around $450 per person).
The Mara River deserves extended time even without crossings - hippo pods, large crocodiles, excellent birdlife along the water. Worth spending an hour just watching the interactions.
Dinner and overnight at Sarova Mara Game Camp.
Drive Time: 7-8 hours via Nairobi
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Early morning game drive in the Mara, breakfast, then long drive to Amboseli. Route goes back through Nairobi (5-6 hours), then continues southeast to Amboseli (another 4-5 hours). Longest driving day of the safari but unavoidable - there's no practical direct route between Mara and Amboseli.
Lunch stop in Nairobi or packed lunch depending on timing. Landscape changes dramatically as you leave the highlands and drop into drier country approaching Amboseli. Kilimanjaro appears on the horizon well before you reach the park.
Arrive at Ol Tukai Lodge late afternoon. The lodge sits inside Amboseli National Park next to a permanent swamp. Wildlife passes through constantly - elephants, buffalo, zebra drinking and feeding visible from the rooms and restaurant terrace. Quick freshen up, then short evening game drive if time permits before dark.
Dinner and overnight at Ol Tukai Lodge.
Drive Time: 4-5 hours
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Final early morning game drive in Amboseli. Start around 6:30 AM to catch Kilimanjaro before clouds form - the mountain shows best at dawn, then usually disappears by mid-morning. Your guide will position you for the classic shot: elephants with the peak behind them.
Amboseli is all about elephants. Large herds moving between the swamps, family groups with calves, big tuskers. The research project here has tracked these families since 1972. Also plenty of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, various antelope.
Return to lodge around 9:00 AM for breakfast. Pack up, then drive back to Nairobi. Lunch stop en route or packed lunch. Arrive in Nairobi mid to late afternoon. Drop off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for evening international flights.
