This six-day luxury safari covers two of Kenya’s best parks without the long drives. Start in Amboseli National Park for large elephant herds against Mount Kilimanjaro. Then fly to the Masai Mara for classic Big Five viewing and, if you’re there July to October, a shot at seeing the migration river crossings.
Using scheduled flights between parks makes sense for travelers from Australia. You’ve already done the long haul, so spend your time watching wildlife instead of sitting in a vehicle for six hours. The camps are properly luxurious but still feel like you’re on safari.
Amboseli’s elephant research program started in 1972. Guides often recognise individual elephants and can tell you about family relationships. The Mara has lions, leopards, buffalo, rhino, and elephants year-round. Predator viewing is very good.
Accommodations:
Flight Time: Approximately 45 minutes
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel or airport, then transfer to Wilson Airport. Flight to Amboseli takes 45 minutes in a light aircraft. You'll fly over the Athi-Kapiti Plains with views of Kilimanjaro if it's clear.
At Amboseli airstrip, transfer to either Tortilis Camp or Ol Tukai Lodge. Tortilis sits in a private conservancy just outside the park with open Kilimanjaro views. Ol Tukai is inside the park next to a swamp where wildlife passes through all day.
After lunch, first game drive around 4:00 PM. Amboseli is compact at 392 square kilometers but wildlife concentrates around the swamps fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro. Elephants, buffalo, zebra, and various antelope use these permanent water sources. Your guide will position you for photos as elephant families move through.
Dinner and overnight at Tortilis Camp or Ol Tukai Lodge.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Morning drive starts around 6:30 AM when Kilimanjaro is usually clear. Focus on the swamps where elephants feed and drink. The research project here has tracked families since 1972, so guides often recognize individual animals and know family relationships.
Amboseli also has buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and antelope. Lions are present but harder to find than in the Mara. Cheetahs hunt on the dry lake bed. Return to camp around 11:00 AM for lunch and rest.
Afternoon drive at 4:00 PM. Visit Observation Hill for views across the basin and good bird watching. Pelicans, Egyptian geese, herons, and egrets are common around the wetlands.
Dinner and overnight at Tortilis Camp or Ol Tukai Lodge.
Flight Time: Approximately 1 hour
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Early drive, then breakfast and transfer to the airstrip. Flight to the Mara takes about an hour, crossing the Rift Valley. The landscape shifts from dry plains to greener grassland.
Land at the airstrip closest to your camp. Angama sits on the escarpment 300 meters above the reserve. Mara Plains is in Olare Motorogi Conservancy with good predator numbers. Mahali Mzuri is also in Motorogi under Virgin Limited Edition.
After lunch, first Mara drive around 4:00 PM. Different landscape from Amboseli with rolling grassland, rivers, and scattered forest. Wildlife density is immediately noticeable. First couple of hours you'll likely see lions, possibly cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, and plains game.
Dinner and overnight at Angama Mara, Mara Plains Camp, or Mahali Mzuri.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Full day exploring the Mara with morning and afternoon drives. Lions are easy to find, often in prides of ten or more. Leopards take more work but sightings are regular near the rivers. Buffalo herds can be hundreds strong. Rhinos are less common but present. Elephants are everywhere.
July to October is migration season. Over a million wildebeest plus zebra and gazelle come from the Serengeti. River crossings are dramatic but unpredictable. Guides stay in radio contact and will position you if something's happening.
Outside migration, resident wildlife provides consistent viewing. Cheetahs hunt the open plains, and over 500 bird species have been recorded.
Dinner and overnight at Angama Mara, Mara Plains Camp, or Mahali Mzuri.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Second full day covering new areas or revisiting productive spots. Option for a full-day drive with picnic lunch, staying out from breakfast until sundowners. This gives flexibility to follow wildlife activity without rushing back for meals.
By now your guide knows your interests and will adjust accordingly. Time at the Mara River is worthwhile even without crossings. Hippos in the pools, crocodiles on the banks, different birds and animals using the riverine forest.
Optional Maasai village visit available to learn about local culture and how communities coexist with wildlife.
Dinner and overnight at Angama Mara, Mara Plains Camp, or Mahali Mzuri.
Flight Time: Approximately 45 minutes
Meals: Breakfast
Final early morning drive before breakfast. Back to camp, then transfer to the airstrip for your mid to late morning flight. Land at Wilson Airport in Nairobi, then transfer to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for your onward journey.
Most Australian travelers use Emirates via Dubai, Qatar via Doha, or Kenya Airways via Bangkok. Evening departures work well with morning Mara flights. Day rooms or overnight accommodation near the airport can be arranged if needed based on your flight times.
