This twelve-day safari covers Kenya from south to north and back again, hitting the best wildlife areas in the country. You start at Amboseli with Kilimanjaro views, head north to Samburu for the special northern species, stop at Ol Pejeta for rhinos, pass through Lake Nakuru, then finish with four days in the Masai Mara. It’s a thorough circuit with enough time in each place to actually settle in.

The properties are all well regarded and well located. Tortilis Camp in Amboseli, Elephant Bedroom in Samburu, Sweetwaters at Ol Pejeta, The Cliff above Nakuru, and Governors’ Camp in the Mara. Four nights in the Mara at the end gives you proper time there rather than a rushed stop.

Accommodations:

  • Tortilis Camp (Amboseli)
  • Elephant Bedroom Camp (Samburu)
  • Sweetwaters Serena Camp (Ol Pejeta)
  • The Cliff Nakuru (Lake Nakuru)
  • Governors’ Camp (Masai Mara)

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

    Driving Time: 4-5 hours

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Leave Nairobi early heading southeast through Maasai country. The drive takes you through dry scrubland and the landscape opens up as you near the park. On a clear morning Kilimanjaro is visible from a long way out. Arrive at Tortilis Camp around lunchtime.

The late afternoon game drive covers the open plains and swamp areas. Amboseli has consistently good elephant viewing and the swamps attract hippos and waterbirds. Lions and cheetahs are around too. A solid first drive to get your bearings in the park.

Dinner and overnight stay at Tortilis Camp.

  • Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning and afternoon drives covering different parts of the park. Start early for the best light on Kilimanjaro before clouds build. Amboseli's elephant families are well studied and your guide can often identify individuals. The park is compact so you can cover it thoroughly without long drives between sightings.

Observation Hill is worth a short stop for the view over the swamps below. The afternoon focuses on predators and the swamp edges where species concentrate. Back at the camp between drives for lunch and a rest before heading out again.

Dinner and overnight stay at Tortilis Camp.

  • Day 3: Amboseli to Samburu National Reserve

    Driving Time: 6-7 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Long drive day heading north from Amboseli up through Nairobi and beyond into the dry lowlands of northern Kenya. The landscape changes noticeably as you drop down from the highlands. Plan for most of the day in the vehicle. Arrive at Elephant Bedroom Camp in the afternoon, the camp sitting on the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River.

There is time for a short evening drive even arriving late. Samburu holds species you won't see in the southern parks including Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx. Elephants are common along the river. It's a different feel from Amboseli almost immediately.

Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.

  • Day 4: Full Day in Samburu National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning and afternoon drives in the reserve. The Ewaso Nyiro River is the focal point, a green corridor through otherwise dry country where animals congregate. Early morning is productive with good predator activity and clearer light. The birdlife is excellent with over 450 species recorded, including several northern specials.

The afternoon might take you into different habitat looking for lions and leopards in the woodland or tracking animals across the drier plains. Between drives you're back at camp beside the river. It's a genuinely different part of Kenya and worth the long drive to get here.

Dinner and overnight stay at Elephant Bedroom Camp.

  • Day 5: Samburu to Ol Pejeta Conservancy

    Driving Time: 3-4 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Head south to Ol Pejeta, back through Nanyuki at the foot of Mount Kenya. The drive is manageable and you arrive at Sweetwaters Serena Camp before lunch. Ol Pejeta is a private conservancy that runs alongside cattle farming, one of the more successful models of wildlife and livestock coexistence in Kenya.

The afternoon drive focuses on rhinos. Ol Pejeta holds East Africa's largest black rhino population and you'll likely see several. There's also the sanctuary for the last two northern white rhinos on earth, worth a visit for the context alone. Lions, elephants, and plains game fill the rest of the conservancy.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

  • Day 6: Full Day in Ol Pejeta Conservancy

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day with morning and afternoon drives. Black rhinos are solitary and stay in thicker bush while white rhinos are more often in open grassland in small groups. Your guide knows the conservancy well and can position you for decent viewing of both. Early morning is the best time for rhino activity.

Optional visit to the chimpanzee sanctuary where rescued chimps from across Africa live in forested enclosures. It's the only place in Kenya to see chimps and an interesting side trip. The afternoon continues with general game viewing across the conservancy's varied habitat.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sweetwaters Serena Camp.

  • Day 7: Ol Pejeta to Lake Nakuru National Park

    Driving Time: 2 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Short drive southwest to Lake Nakuru. You drop into the Rift Valley and reach the park before lunch. The Cliff sits above the park with good views over the lake and surrounding woodland. Check in, have lunch, and head out for an afternoon drive through this compact but productive park.

Nakuru was established as a rhino sanctuary and both black and white rhinos are regularly seen. Rothschild's giraffes were successfully introduced and are now a healthy population. Lions and leopards are present. The lake attracts pelicans, cormorants, and flamingos in varying numbers depending on water levels and conditions.

Dinner and overnight stay at The Cliff Nakuru.

  • Day 8: Lake Nakuru to Masai Mara National Reserve

    Driving Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning game drive in Nakuru before breakfast, then pack up and head west toward the Mara. The drive takes you across the Mau Escarpment and down into Maasai grazing country. It's a scenic route with the landscape opening into classic savanna as you approach the reserve. Arrive at Governors' Camp in the afternoon.

Governors' Camp sits on the Mara River with a prime location in the northern section of the reserve. Even arriving later there's time for an evening drive. After Nakuru's enclosed park the Mara's scale and wildlife density are immediately apparent. This is where you'll spend your last four nights.

Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.

  • Day 9: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

First full day with morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are active. Lions are straightforward to find in the Mara, often in large prides. Cheetahs work the open plains and leopards appear along the river. Governors' Camp's position on the Mara River gives good access to the northern sections of the reserve where wildlife concentrates.

Between July and October the wildebeest migration crossings happen along this stretch of the river. Timing is unpredictable but your guide monitors herd movements. Outside migration the resident wildlife populations are still substantial. Back to camp for lunch between drives and out again in the afternoon.

Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.

  • Day 10: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Second full day in the Mara. By now your guide knows your interests and can plan drives accordingly. You can opt for a full-day outing with a picnic lunch if you want more time out in the reserve. The Mara is large enough that you can explore new areas each day without repeating yourself.

Optional dawn hot air balloon flight over the plains, which gives you a completely different perspective on the landscape and animals. It costs extra and needs advance booking but most people who do it find it worthwhile. The afternoon drive continues the standard morning and evening game viewing rhythm.

Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.

  • Day 11: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Third full day. Four nights in one camp is a luxury that lets you slow down and revisit good spots rather than always looking for something new. Your guide will have a good sense of where particular animals are ranging and can track them over multiple days. Morning drives in the Mara are consistently rewarding.

Optional Maasai village visit in the afternoon to understand how people live alongside wildlife here, which adds useful context to what you've seen across the whole trip. The last evening drive closes out the safari properly before heading back to Nairobi tomorrow.

Dinner and overnight stay at Governors' Camp.

  • Day 12: Masai Mara to Nairobi

    Driving Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Final morning drive before breakfast. One last look at the Mara before packing up and heading back to Nairobi. The drive east takes most of the day and you arrive by mid to late afternoon depending on traffic.

Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Evening departures work fine from here.
