This ten-day safari takes you through Kenya’s southern parks in a logical south-to-north loop. You start at Amboseli with Kilimanjaro views and big elephant herds, move through Tsavo West and Tsavo East covering vast wilderness, then finish with three days in the Masai Mara. Each park has its own character and you spend enough time in each to get a proper feel for it.

The routing works well because each stop is different. Amboseli is compact and photogenic. Tsavo West adds volcanic terrain and Mzima Springs. Tsavo East is flat, wild, and full of red elephants. The Mara brings the classic open grassland experience. Three nights there gives you time without rushing. All four properties are well located for game drives.

Accommodations:

  • Ol Tukai Lodge (Amboseli)
  • Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge (Tsavo West)
  • Ashnil Aruba Lodge (Tsavo East)
  • Sarova Mara Game Camp (Masai Mara)

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

    Driving Time: 4-5 hours

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Leave Nairobi early heading southeast. The road passes through Maasai country and dries out as you drop toward the Amboseli basin. On a clear morning you'll see Kilimanjaro from a distance before you even reach the gate. Arrive at Ol Tukai Lodge around lunchtime.

After settling in, head out for a late afternoon game drive. Amboseli has good elephant numbers and you'll likely see herds on the open plains. Lions and cheetahs are around, and the swamps attract hippos and waterbirds. It's a solid first drive without needing to overhype it.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ol Tukai Lodge.

  • Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning and afternoon drives covering different parts of the park. Start early for the best light on Kilimanjaro. The mountain is clearest in the morning before clouds build. Your guide knows the elephant families well and can read where herds are likely to be at different times of day.

Observation Hill is worth a short stop for the view over the swamps and surrounding plains. The afternoon focuses on predators and the swamp edges where buffalo, zebra, and waterbirds concentrate. Back at the lodge between drives for lunch and rest.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ol Tukai Lodge.

  • Day 3: Amboseli to Tsavo West National Park

    Driving Time: 2-3 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Short drive northeast after breakfast through dry scrubland to Tsavo West. You reach Kilaguni Serena before lunch. The lodge sits above a waterhole that stays busy throughout the day with elephants, buffalo, and smaller animals coming to drink.

The afternoon drive heads to Mzima Springs, clear pools fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro where hippos and crocodiles live. It's a good spot and worth taking your time. The elephants here are stained red from the iron-rich soil, quite different from Amboseli's animals.

Dinner and overnight stay at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge.

  • Day 4: Full Day in Tsavo West National Park

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning and afternoon drives through varied terrain. Tsavo West has volcanic hills, lava flows, and thick bush that holds lions, leopards, and reintroduced rhinos. The dense vegetation makes sightings less predictable than open savanna parks, so manage expectations and enjoy the landscape.

Buffalo herds are large and the birdlife is good. Between drives the lodge waterhole is worth watching from the terrace. Elephants come through regularly in the afternoon and the light is decent before sunset.

Dinner and overnight stay at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge.

  • Day 5: Tsavo West to Tsavo East National Park

    Driving Time: 3-4 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Cross into Tsavo East after breakfast. The terrain shifts noticeably from rocky bush to flat open plains as you move east. Arrive at Ashnil Aruba Lodge along the Voi River where animals come to drink regularly throughout the day.

The afternoon drive covers the river area and nearby plains. Elephant herds here are large and all stained deep red by the laterite soil. Lions are common and easier to spot in the open terrain than in Tsavo West. Buffalo can appear in huge numbers.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Aruba Lodge.

  • Day 6: Full Day in Tsavo East National Park

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning and afternoon drives across Kenya's largest park. Head early to the Galana River where predators and herds concentrate at permanent water. Lugard Falls is a good stop, the river cutting narrow channels through solid rock with crocodiles resting in the pools below.

The afternoon covers open plains where cheetahs, gerenuk, and ostriches are regularly seen. The park has a remote feel and you can go long stretches without other vehicles in quieter months. It's unhurried game viewing.

Dinner and overnight stay at Ashnil Aruba Lodge.

  • Day 7: Tsavo East to Masai Mara National Reserve

    Driving Time: 6-7 hours

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This is the longest drive of the trip heading northwest through farming highlands and across the Rift Valley into Maasai country. The landscapes change several times during the journey. Plan for a full day in the vehicle and arrive at Sarova Mara Game Camp in the afternoon.

There's still time for a short evening drive. After the sparse Tsavo terrain the Mara's wildlife density is immediately noticeable. Lions, elephants, buffalo, zebra, and giraffe spread across the open plains. Your guide works the radio to find out what's happening.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

  • Day 8: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Morning and afternoon drives. Leave at dawn when predators are most active. Lions are generally easy to find in the Mara. Cheetahs favour the open areas and leopards appear along the rivers and in woodland. The Mara River holds hippos and large crocodiles year-round.

Between July and October the wildebeest migration crossings happen along the Mara River. Timing is never guaranteed but your guide monitors herd movements and positions you as well as possible. Outside migration the resident wildlife is still impressive.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

  • Day 9: Full Day in Masai Mara National Reserve

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Second full day in the Mara. By now your guide knows what you're interested in and can plan accordingly. You can opt for a full-day drive with a picnic lunch if you want maximum time out in the reserve instead of returning to camp at midday.

Optional extras include a dawn hot air balloon flight over the plains or a Maasai village visit in the afternoon. Both cost extra and need advance booking. The last evening drive is a good chance to revisit any spots from earlier in the trip.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sarova Mara Game Camp.

  • Day 10: Masai Mara to Nairobi

    Driving Time: 5-6 hours

    Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

One last morning drive before breakfast, then pack up and head back to Nairobi. The drive east through the Rift Valley takes most of the day. You should arrive by mid to late afternoon depending on traffic.

Drop off at your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Evening departures work fine from here.
