Majestic Kenya Safaris

7-Day Luxury Kenya Flying Safari

Starts from

$2,250 pp (USD)

Overview

This 7-day safari combines Amboseli and the Masai Mara using scheduled flights, reducing long road travel. You’ll spend two nights in Amboseli, known for its large elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro, followed by four nights in the Mara for extended game viewing.

Amboseli’s swamps attract wildlife year-round, making sightings relatively consistent. In the Masai Mara, four nights allow for three full days of game drives, giving enough time to explore different areas without feeling rushed. The reserve supports strong populations of big cats and other wildlife, with the migration (July – October) adding to the experience.

Flights between parks take about 45 minutes, making the overall journey efficient and comfortable.

Accommodations:

  • Amboseli: Tortilis Camp (2 nights)
  • Masai Mara: Angama Mara or Mara Plains Camp (4 night

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli National Park

    Flight Time: 45 minutes

    Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel and transfer to Wilson Airport for your flight to Amboseli. The Cessna Caravan holds about 12 passengers and flies low enough that you get decent views of the landscape below. On clear days Kilimanjaro shows up well before you land.

Touch down at Amboseli airstrip around mid-morning. Someone from Tortilis Camp meets you for the short drive to camp. Tortilis sits in a private conservancy just outside the park boundary with nothing blocking the view toward Kilimanjaro. The tents are proper luxury - big beds, real bathrooms, private deck, the works. Check in, have lunch, then head out for your first game drive around 4:00 PM.

Amboseli is small at 392 square kilometers but wildlife concentrates around the swamps. Elephants are the main draw - big tuskers, family groups with calves, bulls wandering solo. The research project here has tracked these families since 1972, so guides often know individual animals by sight. Also plenty of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, various antelope. Lions are around but take more work to find than in the Mara.

Dinner and overnight at Tortilis Camp.

  • Day 2: Amboseli National Park

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Up early for a 6:30 start when Kilimanjaro is usually clear. Morning light is better and the mountain doesn't stay visible long once the sun gets up - clouds build around the summit by mid-morning most days. Your guide will position you for photos when conditions are good.

Spend the morning around the swamps where elephants feed. By now you've probably figured out that Amboseli is really about elephants and the mountain. There's other wildlife but that's the combination people come for. Observation Hill in the middle of the park is worth the short walk up for views across the whole basin.

Back to camp for lunch and a break during the heat. Pool, spa treatments available, or just sit on your deck and watch whatever wanders past. Afternoon drive from 4:00 until dark. Cheetahs use the dry lake bed when they're hunting. Leopards stick to the acacia woodlands mostly.

Dinner and overnight at Tortilis Camp.

  • Day 3: Amboseli to Masai Mara

    Flight Time: 1 hour

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Early game drive before breakfast if you want it, otherwise just breakfast and pack up. Transfer back to the airstrip for your flight to the Mara. The routing usually goes via Nairobi with a quick fuel stop, then continues to whichever Mara airstrip you're using. Total time about an hour.

Land at the airstrip closest to your camp. Angama sits up on the escarpment overlooking the reserve - same spot they filmed the last scene of Out of Africa. Mara Plains is down in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy with just eight tents. Both are genuinely high-end properties. After check-in and lunch, afternoon drive into the Mara or conservancy depending on where you're staying.

The difference from Amboseli is immediate - much bigger space, way more animals. Lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffe spread across the plains. If you're at Mara Plains in the conservancy, you get fewer vehicles and night drives which aren't allowed in the main reserve.

Dinner and overnight at Angama Mara or Mara Plains Camp.

  • Day 4: Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Full day out with morning and afternoon drives. Lions are easy - the Mara has lots of them and they're visible. Leopards take more effort but show up regularly near the rivers. Cheetahs prefer open ground for hunting. Buffalo herds can be several hundred strong. Rhinos are around but less common. Elephants everywhere.

If you're there July through October, the migration will be the focus. Over a million wildebeest plus zebra crossing from Tanzania. River crossings happen but they're unpredictable - could see multiple crossings in a morning or wait days. Guides stay in radio contact so if something's happening you'll get there.

Outside migration months the resident wildlife still delivers. Plenty going on without the crowds.

Dinner and overnight at Angama Mara or Mara Plains Camp.

  • Day 5: Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Second full day covering different areas. Some people do a full-day drive with packed lunch. Others prefer coming back to camp midday. The Mara River is worth extended time even without crossings - lots of hippos, big crocodiles, different bird species along the water.

By now your guide knows what you're after and will focus accordingly. Looking for big cats? He knows which prides have been where. Want to find rhinos? Takes more work but he'll make it happen if they're around.

Both camps offer hot air balloon safaris if you want to add that (around $450 per person, needs advance booking). Otherwise just more game drives.

Dinner and overnight at Angama Mara or Mara Plains Camp.

  • Day 6: Masai Mara

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Third full day. At this point you've probably seen most of what the Mara has to offer, so today's more about enjoying it rather than checking boxes. Spend time watching a pride of lions instead of rushing to the next sighting. Sit at the river for an hour. Take the morning slow if you've been doing early starts all week.

Between drives there's time to relax at camp. Angama has a ridiculous infinity pool with views over the reserve. Mara Plains is smaller and quieter. Both have spa treatments, good food, attentive staff without being overbearing.

Last night on safari so make it count.

Dinner and overnight at Angama Mara or Mara Plains Camp.

  • Day 7: Masai Mara to Nairobi

    Flight Time: 45 minutes

    Meals: Breakfast

Final early game drive before breakfast. Back to camp, pack up, transfer to the airstrip. Flights to Nairobi usually leave mid-morning, landing at Wilson around noon. Transfer to your Nairobi hotel or directly to Jomo Kenyatta for international connections.

Most US flights leave Nairobi in the evening (KLM to Amsterdam, Ethiopian to Addis, Kenya Airways to various hubs, Emirates and Qatar via Middle East). Day room at a hotel near the airport can be arranged if you need somewhere to kill time between landing and your evening flight.
