For the absolute best wildlife viewing, plan your trip during the dry seasons from June to October or January to February. July through October is particularly special since you’ll catch the Great Migration in the Masai Mara, when over a million wildebeest and zebras cross from Tanzania. The beach destinations along the coast stay warm and sunny most of the year, with temperatures hovering between 25-30°C. If you’re trying to avoid rain, skip March to May (the long rains) and November (short rains). That said, even during rainy seasons, showers typically don’t last all day, and you’ll find better deals on accommodations.
To really soak in both experiences without feeling rushed, set aside at least 10 days. Most of our guests find that 6 days on safari followed by 4 days at the beach hits the sweet spot. The safari portion gives you enough time to visit key parks like the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru, and Amboseli, while the beach stay lets you properly unwind and enjoy some water activities. If you can stretch to two weeks, even better – you could add destinations like Tsavo or spend more time just relaxing by the ocean.
You’ve got two main options here. Flying saves you loads of time – it’s just a quick 2-hour hop from the Masai Mara to either Mombasa or Diani’s Ukunda Airport. The flights give you stunning aerial views of Kenya’s landscape too. Driving takes longer but lets you see more of the country and local life. If you’re heading to Diani Beach from Amboseli, for instance, you’ll pass through interesting areas and can stop at viewing points. We can help you weigh the pros and cons based on your schedule and preferences.
There’s something for every style and budget. At the luxury end, think private tented camps in the Masai Mara with your own plunge pool, personal butler, and gourmet dining under the stars. Mid-range lodges offer comfortable rooms, good food, and often great views, while our budget-friendly options still give you a clean, safe base for your adventures. At the beach, you might choose anything from an exclusive boutique hotel in Watamu to a lively resort in Diani. Most safari lodges include all meals, while beach resorts offer flexible plans – you might want bed & breakfast to try local restaurants, or all-inclusive to really relax.
Very safe – it’s actually Kenya’s most popular holiday combination. We work exclusively with vetted transfer companies and accommodation providers who’ve been in business for years. If you’re flying, we use respected airlines like Safarilink and AirKenya. For road transfers, our drivers know the routes inside out and stay in constant contact with our operations team. The lodges and resorts all have security and most beach properties have their own private stretches of beach.
For safari, think practical and neutral: khaki, beige, or olive clothes (skip bright colors or dark blue/black as they attract tsetse flies). Pack light long-sleeved shirts and trousers for dawn/dusk game drives, a warm fleece (mornings can be chilly), sturdy walking shoes, and a wide-brimmed hat. For the beach, bring typical beach gear plus modest clothing for visiting local areas. Don’t forget high-SPF sunscreen, good insect repellent (with DEET), any prescription meds, and a good camera with extra batteries. Most lodges do laundry same-day, so you can pack lighter than you might think.
Really flexible these days. Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, halal, or have specific allergies, the lodges can accommodate you. Many have surprisingly sophisticated kitchens – you might find yourself having a gourmet vegetarian curry in the middle of the Masai Mara! Just let us know your requirements when booking, and we’ll make sure every property is briefed and prepared. Some remote camps might need advance notice for very specific requirements, but they’ll always ensure you’re well fed.
In the Masai Mara, you’ve got an excellent chance of seeing the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo) – especially if you stay 3-4 days. You’ll definitely see loads of zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and various antelopes. Lake Nakuru is famous for flamingos and rhinos, while Amboseli is elephant heaven with over 1,000 elephants against the backdrop of Kilimanjaro. At the coast, dolphins are common, and if you’re lucky, you might spot whale sharks between November and March. The coral reefs are teeming with tropical fish, and sea turtles often nest on quieter beaches.
Many are incredibly well-set up for families. Places like Serena Beach and Diani Reef have dedicated kids’ clubs with supervised activities like beach volleyball, swimming lessons, and craft sessions. Several resorts offer family rooms or interconnecting options, and most have children’s pools and protected beach areas for safe swimming. Some even run junior marine biology programs. The staff at these resorts are used to families and go out of their way to make kids feel special – think special menu options and early dinner times if needed.
The sky’s the limit here! A dawn hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara followed by a champagne breakfast is unforgettable. You might want to add a night fly-camping under the stars, or visit a traditional Maasai village to learn about their culture firsthand. At the beach, try kite-surfing lessons in Diani, go deep-sea fishing, or take a sunset dhow cruise with fresh seafood and local music. For something really special, we can arrange private beach dinners, treehouse stays, or even sleeping under the stars in the Masai Mara. Just let us know what interests you, and we’ll make it happen.
